An energy information system for use with a circuit breaker coupled between a power source and a load, the energy information system comprising: sensing apparatus for sensing at least one of i) a voltage, and ii) a current flowing between the power source and the load through the circuit breaker; detecting apparatus for detecting transitions of a sensed voltage; counting apparatus for counting a number of times the circuit breaker trips and interrupts the current flow between the power source and the load; measuring apparatus for i) measuring the current flow through the circuit breaker when the circuit breaker trips and interrupts the current flow between the power source and the load and ii) determining a plurality of energy related parameters including a measure of at least one of the voltage, the current and the frequency based on an output from the detecting apparatus, between the power source and the load; input apparatus for accepting a user input, the user input controlling at least one of the circuit breaker and a display apparatus; the display apparatus for displaying at least one of the plurality of conditions of the circuit breaker responsive to the input apparatus; and communication apparatus coupled to the input apparatus for selectively communicating at least one of the plurality of energy related parameters to a remote terminal.

A graphical energy information display system having a menu for user selection of energy related information for an AC load control device, comprising: a device for monitoring AC electrical load usage of a load using a voltage shifter coupled to a sensor to bias the voltage above a ground potential by a predetermined voltage to produce a full-wave biased voltage signal; a graphical display device connected to said device for monitoring AC electrical load usage, said graphical display device adapted so as to graphically display indicia and at least one parameter of the AC electrical load usage of the load said parameters being displayed as a signal representation; menu means for displaying a plurality of selections on said graphical display device, each of said plurality of selections representing at least one parameter of the AC electrical load usage; and menu selection means for selecting at least one of said plurality of selections so as to cause said graphical display device to graphically present the signal representing said at least one parameter of the AC electrical load usage associated with said selections.

Apparatus for closing a circuit breaker of a circuit that carries a substantial current includes a terminals (W1, W2, W12, W13, W14) for connection to an available source of electric power. The electric power available is typically 24 VDC, 48 VDC, 125 VDC or 120 VAC. An actuator including an electric motor M and a solenoid S both designed to operate on 24 VDC first cocks charging springs and then releases the charging springs to close the circuit breaker. A controller including a microprocessor U3 is connected to and derives power from the connected terminals and produces a pulse width modulated control signal (RUN; CLOSE) for controlling the actuator. The duty cycle of the pulse width modulated signal is adjusted in relation to the electric power supplied by the selected source so that the power supplied to the motor and relay functions effectively as the required 24 VDC power. Sensors J1 sense the condition of the charging springs, a charging cam, the circuit breaker, etc., and prevent operation of the circuit breaker closing apparatus unless all conditions necessary to safe operation are satisfied.

A trip circuit for tripping a circuit breaker has a first coil having a relatively large number of turns and therefore a relatively slow reaction time and a second coil having a relatively small number of turns and therefore a relatively fast reaction time. The first coil is responsive to a relatively low current level through a circuit breaker for tripping the circuit breaker at the rated tripping current. The second coil is responsive to a higher current through the circuit breaker for tripping the circuit breaker with great rapidity in case the higher level is reached before the first coil has an opportunity to react.

The signals are rectified by a modified full wave rectrifier to provide a power source, a positive signal associated with the positive range of the current, and a positive signal associated with the negative range of the current. A microprocessor based trip unit for a circuit breaker is disclosed. The instantaneous current magnitudes in each phase and in the neutral of the circuit being protected are simultaneously and sequentially sampled by respective sample and hold circuits. The measured values are then applied to a respective analog-to-digital converter and the digitized values are sequentially applied to a microprocessor. The microprocessor calculates true RMS current and sums the signals of all phases and neutral to determine presence and magnitude of a ground fault current. To permit use of an 8-bit microprocessor, while maintaining high resolution of measured current over a large range, novel automatic scale adjustment is provided. The memory of prior thermal history of the circuit breaker is provided electronically by a capacitor circuit which is discharged at a rate representative of the rate of cooling of the circuit breaker. The output of the capacitor circuit is loaded into the microprocessor when the circuit breaker comes back onto the line after a prior opening operation. Any desired number of trip units can be remotely located from a switchboard frame containing a respective plurality of circuit breakers without local trip units.
