A gasket includes an intermediate layer having resilient sealing beads flanked by stopper beads. The three-layer gasket, particularly designed for heavy duty racing engines, provides a relatively robust cross-section in web-areas between cylinder bore apertures. A thin bottom layer includes wrap-around flanged portions extending about cylinder bore edges of the intermediate layer to partially overlap cylinder bore aperture areas of that layer. The flanged portions may include a plurality of waves to increase forces to generate the seal. A thin top layer overlies the intermediate layer, as well as the overlapping portions of the bottom layer. In one described embodiment, the overlapping portions are limited to cylinder bore edges between cylinder bores. As a between-engine-overhaul indication of engine health, the top gasket layer is adapted via plastic deformation to form a permanent indentation in an aluminum cylinder head to signal excessive engine operation.

A multiple layer gasket adapted for sealing between mated surfaces of rigid members, said surfaces containing a plurality of spaced apart apertures; said gasket provided in kit form for use by aftermarket racing engine builders. In one preferred embodiment, the kit comprises a combustion gasket, and includes at least three loose, unriveted combustion gasket layers. All three layers contain combustion apertures but only the outer layers include fluid apertures. A center layer is designed as a fluid flow-metering layer of the gasket, and includes stenciled cutouts for the fluid apertures, the center layer being adapted for alignment with at least a portion of the first or top layer. Specific locations and shapes of apertures in the center layer are to be created in the field (i.e. at racing site). Finally, in one preferred embodiment, the layers may be doweled to be more easily mated together during installation in an engine.

Field-adjustable gasket kit

A multi-layered gasket for a combustion engine having a central gasket layer and a plurality of active and spacer gasket layers that are removably secured together is disclosed. The active layers are arranged in face-to-face engagement with the spacer layers in an alternating manner with the central layer being positioned in the center of the gasket. The spacer layers may be selectively removed or added to vary the compression ratio of the engine. Alternatively, spacer layers may be selectively substituted With additional spacer layers having differing thicknesses to selectively vary the compression ratio of the engine. Each of the gasket layers are provided with a visual indicator to distinguish the respective layers from one another. Retaining mechanisms for removably securing the gasket layers together are also disclosed.

A multi-layered gasket for a combustion engine having a plurality of active and spacer gasket layers that are removably secured together is disclosed. The active layers are arranged in face-to-face engagement with the spacer layers in an alternating manner. The spacer layers may be selectively removed or added to vary the compression ratio of the engine. Alternatively, spacer layers may be selectively substituted with additional spacer layers having differing thincknesses to selectively vary the compression ratio of the engine. Retaining mechanisms for removably securing the gasket layers together are also disclosed.
