This disclosure relates to methods of making novel dissolving wood pulps by processes comprising acid prehydrolysis, pulping, and a multi-stage bleaching process comprising oxidation with a catalyst and peroxide under acidic conditions, as well as to products made therefrom having a combination of medium-purity, low viscosity, and improved reactivity, filterability, and/or clogging that can be used as a substitute for traditional high-purity dissolving pulps in a wide variety of applications.

Dissolving wood pulps and methods of making and using the same

A substance delivery and filter system for use in delivering or conveying a dry, fluid powder substance from a closed container to an open receptacle is provided. The delivery and filter system includes a filter housing having a heavy particle cyclone separator, a fine particle filter bag assembly, a substance inlet port positioned just above the heavy particle cyclone separator, a substance outlet port positioned at the bottom of the cyclone separator, and a filtered air outlet port communicating between the clean side of the filter bag assembly and the outside environment. The powder substance in the container is entrained in an air stream and introduced into the filter housing through a conduit connected to the substance inlet port. The heavier substance particles fall downwardly from the swirling air stream caused by the cyclone separator and are discharged into an open-air receptacle from the substance outlet port. The air and particulate matter are forced upwardly to the filter bag assembly where the fine particles are trapped on the outside of the filter bags. Filtered air is exhausted from the filter housing through the filtered air outlet ports. The filter bags are cleaned by bursts of air introduced into the filter housing through the filtered air outlet port to purge the filter bags of any substance collected thereon.

Dust-free powder substance delivery and filter system

A device which permits the conveyance of a dry fluid substance from one receptacle to another without the release of a significant amount of dust into the surrounding atmosphere is provided. The device is a housing with an interior volume divided into two sections and having an access opening and a discharge opening. A dry fluid substance is introduced into the device and into an inner chamber within the interior volume of the device which guides the substance from the access opening to the discharge opening and causes the separation of particulate matter from the substance. The particulate matter dispersed from the substance is drawn by a vacuum applied to the housing from the inner chamber into the filter chamber where the particulate matter is retained on a plurality of fine filter bag assemblies. At predetermined intervals, the vacuum applied to the device is shut off which causes the retained particulate matter to fall from the filter bags downwardly in the filter chamber through a pathway and discharged into the center of the stream of substance being discharged through the discharge opening. Thus, the particulate matter is reintroduced into the stream of substance at the point of discharge, but is delivered within the stream of substance which limits the creation of dust at the discharge point. In a preferred embodiment, the clean air chamber and filter chamber of the device are divided into quadrants and each quadrant is connected by a hose to the source of the vacuum. A valve positioned between the hose and the source of the vacuum permits the sequential closure of one section of the device while leaving the remaining sections open. This permits the particulate matter to be released from an individual section or sections of the device during the loading process. This can be regulated by conventional devices.

Dry fluid substance loading device

A device which permits the conveyance of a dry fluid substance from one receptacle to another without the release of a significant amount of dust into the surrounding atmosphere is provided. The device is a housing with an interior volume divided into two sections and having an access opening and a discharge opening. A dry fluid substance is introduced into the device and impinges against an orifice wall having a plurality of orifices therethrough, each sized to slow conveyance of the substance through the housing. The contact with the orifice wall causes the separation of fine particulate matter from the substance. The fine particulate matter dispersed from the substance is drawn by a negative pressure applied to the housing from the inner chamber into the filter chamber where the particulate matter is retained on a plurality of fine filter bag assemblies. At predetermined intervals, the vacuum applied to the device is shut off which allows the retained particulate matter to be released from the filter bags and fall downwardly in the filter chamber through a separate pathway and discharged through an exit tube into the center of the stream of substance after it exits through the discharge opening after the point of discharge, but is encapsulated within the stream of substance which limits the exposure of fines to the atmosphere at the discharge point. A plurality of doors are mounted around the discharge opening and are biased to a closed position. When the substance collected in the housing exceeds a certain amount, the doors automatically open to discharge the substance.

A filter system that is portable and has no moving parts usable for industrial purposes to filter dry fluid substances such as Barite, Hemitite, cement and the like. Within a filter housing are a cyclone separator for removing heavier substance and a fine filter for filtering lighter powdery substance. The inlet to the housing is connectable to the vent of a storage receptacle to which substance is being transferred under the power of a blower. The blower creates the stream that causes substance to flow through the filter system so that no other power means is required. To purge the filter system, a normally capped outlet is connected directly to the storage receptacle and a vent port from the filter housing is connected directly to the blower means. The blower means is operated in spurts to create bursts of air in a direction opposite to the filtering direction to dislodge powder from the fine filter and blow the powder and heavier particles from the filter housing directly into the storage receptacle. Upon completion of the entire operation, the portable filter system can be transported to another site.
