A patient monitoring and repositioning system includes a mattress, a sheet residing on an upper surface of the mattress, a housing containing a drive mechanism, and a sensor adapted to sense a position of a patient resting on the mattress. The drive mechanism is operable to pull the sheet and thereby pull the patient resting thereon. The housing receives the sheet through a slot. In the event that the patient is in an undesirable position on the mattress as detected by the sensor, a controller directs the drive mechanism to pull the sheet so as to pull the patient thereon from the undesirable position to a desirable, predetermined position. The controller may direct the drive mechanism automatically or indicate the undesirable position to a caregiver so that the caregiver may direct the drive mechanism accordingly.

Patient monitoring and repositioning system and related method

A patient repositioning system for pulling a patient toward a head end of a bed includes a sheet, a mattress, and a housing which contains at least a part of a drive mechanism for operatively coupling to and pulling the sheet. The housing resides below a head end piece of the mattress, and is secured to the bed deck. The sheet pulling structure extends out of the housing via a slot and releasably attaches to the sheet, in a manner which has a low profile so as to pass through the slot. The sheet is longer than and wider than the mattress, and has beaded longitudinal side edges which are retained within rows of spaced retainers located on opposite sides of the mattress. During pulling of the sheet, the contoured shape of the housing facilitates movement of the sheet into the housing via the slot, even though the sheet width extends beyond the lateral edges of the mattress. The sheet may include indicia for indicating a 'loaded' condition, and also usage indicia to indicate that it is time for a new sheet to be used.

Alternatively, instead of a side bolster (), the invention contemplates the use of transition pieces () near the head end (), a rotatable housing (), or a telescopically expandable/contractable housing (), thereby to expand to accommodate bariatric dimensions and contract to reduced dimensions so as to fit through a standard size doorway.

An example patient positioning device may include a flexible track positioned along each of the lateral edges of a sleep surface and extending substantially the entire length of the sleep surface, a sheet including beaded edges for slidably engaging the tracks such that the sheet spans between the first track and the second track on the sleep surface, and/or a drive mechanism located proximate a head end of the sleep surface and configured to pull the sheet towards the head end of the bed.

A sheet receiver for a patient repositioning system includes a housing adapted to be supported at a first end of a bed deck and a pulling device located primarily within an internal compartment of the housing. The housing has an access door adapted to open and to close so as to provide access to the internal compartment via an opening, and the housing also has an elongated slot extending along a first end thereof, and spaced from the opening. A connector has an innermost end secured to the pulling device within the internal compartment and an outermost end removably attachable to a sheet located on a mattress supported on the bed deck. The connector spans substantially the length of the slot and may include at least one window near the innermost end, to facilitate cleaning of the internal compartment. The housing includes impeding structure which prevents the inadvertent insertion of the connector and/or the sheet into the internal compartment via the opening.
