A trolling motor column is supported in a support frame by virtue of the ball and socket connection. The column passes through the ball. The ball has a bore through which the column extends. The column may be secured in different positions to the bore or a tube which extends from the bore in the ball. The support framework houses the socket which surrounds the ball. A clutch mechanism is provided to regulate the degree of force required to displace the ball within the socket. A neutral or vertical position indicator on the ball and socket is provided to easily reposition the column to near vertical after an encounter with an underwater object. As a result, the column can flex in a multiplicity of planes around a 360&deg; circle.

This invention relates to a trolling motor which includes a control system capable of executing a predetermined sequence of events which will clear entangled weeds from the propeller, motor housing, and support column. The control system for the trolling motor provides momentary reversal of the propeller to accomplish reliable cleaning of the submerged components of the trolling motor without disturbing the operator selected forward speed. The system includes an input for manually activating a cleaning cycle, for periodically activating cleaning cycles, or for automatically activating a cleaning cycle upon detection of weed fouling of the submerged components.

An improved technique for operation and assembly of trolling motors is disclosed. The direction indicator assembly is flexibly mounted to allow its initial assembly in any direction. The direction indicator can then be flexibly moved and twisted into the proper orientation where its arrow aligns with the direction of the thrust motor. If any fine-tuning is required, the direction indicator can then be turned relative to a gear mounted to it. The positioning system for the stem supporting the thrust motor includes a clutch system to avoid reverse movements of the drive system for the stem supporting the thrust motor. Fine adjustments can be made to the direction indicator, even after the thrust motor has struck a fixed object and rotated through the use of a clutching system. The clutching system is automatic and allows the continuation of steering commands to the thrust motor once the shock load that has caused the clutch to disengage is removed.

Trolling motor clutch mechanism

A movable handle mounted to a trolling motorhead is disclosed. The handle is pivotally adjustable upwardly and downwardly to suit different positions of a fisherman while controlling the trolling motor. The handle spans across the motorhead and acts as a tiller for pivoting the motor about its axis. The resistance to positional changes is adjustable and protective features are provided to prevent damage to the adjustment mechanism in the event of tightening. The handle incorporates therein various controls for the motorhead.

A stowage device is provided which allows a trolling motor to be longitudinally raised and held in place. The stowage device has a collar, such as a U-bolt, which fits around the trolling motor shaft. The closed end of the collar is rigidly attached to a supporting structure, such as a boat hull or an attachment to the hull. A cam is rotatably attached to the collar so that it can engage the trolling motor shaft. A handle attached to the cam allows the fisherman to control the rotational position of the cam. The trolling motor shaft is inserted between the closed end of the collar and the cam. With the cam in the unlocked position, the trolling motor shaft is free to move and the trolling motor may be positioned anywhere between its two end positions. In its first end position, the trolling motor propeller is in the water, and in its second end position, the trolling motor propeller is out of the water. For normal trolling use, the trolling motor propeller will be in the water. To hold the trolling motor free of the water, the motor is raised to the desired position and the cam is operable to lock the trolling motor in the desired position.

A foot pedal includes a base and a foot pad pivotally mounted to the base, the foot pad being pivotal by a user to command a desired steering direction. A membrane potentiometer senses rotational position of the motor to develop an electrical signal representative of the rotational position, the signal comprising a steering feedback signal. A second membrane potentiometer senses pivotal position of the foot pad relative to the base to develop an electrical signal representative of the pivotal position, the signal comprising a steering command signal. A steering control is mounted to the mounting apparatus for steering the trolling motor, including a servo driven gear set for rotating the trolling motor and an electrical control responsive to the steering command signal and the steering feedback signal for actuating the servo to rotate the trolling motor to steer the boat.

Kill function for a steered trolling motor

An outboard motor mount is provided for a boat having a hull defining an inside area to be occupied by a user. The motor is mounted for movement relative to the boat between an operative position wherein a propeller on the motor is submerged in the water and a storage position wherein the outboard motor resides substantially entirely within the inside area of the hull. It is possible with the inventive structure for the user to pivot the outboard motor in one motion back and further between the operative and storage positions without necessitating assembly/disassembly of the trolling motor. In the storage position, the motor resides conveniently within the inside area defined by the hull. When use of the motor is desired, a simple pivoting action replaces the motor in its operative position.
