Microcellular polyurethane elastomer shoe sole components have exceptional physical properties may be prepared from isocyanate-terminated prepolymers derived from polyoxypropylene diols having a molecular weight of from about 2000 Da to 8000 Da, an unsaturation less than about 0.02 meq/g, and a random oxyethylene content of from about 5 to about 15 weight percent. The shoe sole components exhibit high tensile strength, elongation, resilience, and in addition have excellent tear strength, particularly 90.degree. angle tear.

Microcellular elastomers with improved processability and properties

It has been discovered that a particular polyurethane formulation may be used to prepare 'pour-in-place' (PIP) polyurethane foam articles where the formulation is injected into a mold bearing an exterior covering such as a fabric without the foaming liquid striking through the layer. The formulation employs a hydrophilic polyhydric compound to help the reactivity balance that minimizes penetration of the exterior covering while also stabilizing the rising foam against shear collapse without excessively tightening the foam. Contrary to the conventional expectation that the hydrophilic polyhydric compound would cause strike through problems since it delays the initial reaction time, it has been found to have the noted stabilizing effect. A preferred hydrophilic polyhydric compound is glycerine. A preferred isocyanate for the formulation is tolylene diisocyanate (TDI), in contrast to diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) heretofore used in PIP foams.

Novel polyester diols are described containing aliphatically saturated divalent diacyl moieties and olefinically unsaturated divalent diacyl moieties in a mole ratio of 0.25:1 to 3:1; and divalent dioxy moieties which are linear and/or branched, preferably divalent branched dioxy moieties and divalent linear dioxy moieties in a mole ratio of 0.3:1 to 3:1, the diacyl moieties being bonded through ester linkage to the dioxy moieties in a mole ratio of at least 1.75 dioxy moieties per diacyl moiety, wherein the polyester diol is end-blocked essentially only by alcoholic hydroxyl groups and has an acid number of less than 3. The novel polyester diols are highly useful in the production of polyurethane/vinyl polymer copolymers by reaction with polyisocyanates and polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers. The polyester diols can be used for this purpose by mixing same with the polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer, a catalyst capable of catalyzing polyurethane-forming reactions of polyisocyanates and polyhydroxyl compounds and the resulting compositions can be used in batch or automated molding operations. The novel tough polyurethane/vinyl polymer copolymers, reinforced or unreinforced, are useful as substitutes for metals in the manufacture of structural and other parts, such as, automotive fenders for the purpose of providing energy-saving light-weight parts, and appliance and business machine housings.

Copolymers, compositions, and articles, and methods for making same

Improvements in polymer/polyol compositions which are convertible by reaction with polyisocyanates to polyurethanes which are pigmented to a medium to dark color and which inherently chalk upon exposure to weather and wherein the polymer of the polymer/polyol composition is dispersed in the polyol thereof and is formed from one or more polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers. The improvement provides to said polyurethanes resistance to chalking on exposure to weather and in one embodiment comprises the presence, in the polymer/polyol compositions used to make the polyurethanes, of a metallocene from the class consisting of ferrocene, ferrocene derivatives, cobaltocene and nickelocene in an amount effective to provide chalk resistance. Optionally, the metallocene can be present in the polyisocyanate composition instead of the polymer/polyol composition. Improved dark colored polyurethanes are made by reacting a mixture comprising (a) a polymer/polyol composition and (b) an organic polyisocyanate in the presence of (c) a catalyst for the reaction of (a) and (b), (d) a metalocene, preferably ferrocene, or a ferrocene polymer and (e) a medium to dark pigment to produce the polyurethane.
