Short-chain surfactants such as octyl sulfate are used to provide a solvent-like cleaning function in detergent compositions. Preferred bleach-containing hard surface cleaners comprising the short-chain surfactants and long-chain surfactants, are especially useful for bathroom and kitchen clean-up operations. Compositions with long-plus-short chain surfactants including alkyl sulfates, olefin sulfonates, amine oxides and the like, are disclosed.

The compositions have a pH of from about 1 to about 5.5, preferably from about 2 to about 4 when the dicarboxylate builder is used. The compositions are in the form of aqueous liquids. Short chain peaked distribution nonionic detergent suffactants provide surprisingly superior sudsing characteristics.

These compositions are particularly desirable because use of them in the dishwasher does not result in precipitation of insolubles on the dishware or dishwasher parts.

Granular detergent compositions suitable for use in automatic dishwashing machines are disclosed. The compositions contain detergency builder materials, a chlorine bleach component, a low-foaming nonionic surfactant compatible with the bleach and suds control components comprising an alkyl phosphate ester and a source of calcium ions.

Zwitterionic surfactant compounds are made readily biodegradable in the environment by the inclusion of a biochemically and/or hydrolytically labile chemical linkage located between the cationic and anionic charge centers of the compounds and anywhere from the second to the tenth atom distant from the cationic charge center. The biodegradable linkage is preferably an ester or amide. The alkoxylated zwitterionic surfactants herein exhibit outstanding particulate soil removal performance and are also effective in removing oily soils from fabrics, in addition to being readily biodegradable. Also described are detergent compositions containing the zwitterionic surfactants, and, optionally containing cosurfactants and detergent builders.
