A hot dip coating system comprises a bath of molten coating metal contained in a vessel having a strip passage opening located below the top surface of the bath. A metal strip is directed along a path extending through the strip passage opening and through the bath of molten coating metal, to coat the strip. An electromagnet is employed to prevent the escape of the bulk of the molten coating metal from the bath through the strip passage opening while permitting the strip to move along its path. Expedients are provided to reduce leakage of molten coating metal through the strip passage opening.

A hot dip coating system comprises a bath of molten coating metal contained in a vessel having a strip passage opening located below the top surface of the bath. A metal strip is directed along a path extending through the strip passage opening and through the bath of molten coating metal, to coat the strip. A plug composed of solidified coating metal surrounds the strip downstream of the strip passage opening and is substantially stationary relative to the moving strip. The plug prevents escape of molten coating metal from the bath through the strip passage opening while permitting the strip to move along its path. Expedients are provided to chill the coating metal downstream of the strip passage opening to form and maintain the plug and to heat that part of the molten metal coating bath which is immediately downstream of the plug.

Hot dip coating employing a plug of chilled coating metal

A hot dip coating apparatus and method for coating a continuous steel strip, wire, or like continuous member with zinc, aluminum, tin, lead, or alloys of each. A molten coating bath is contained in a vessel having a bottom opening upwardly through which the steel member is directed. Magnetic containment devices located below the vessel's bottom opening prevent the escape of molten metal from the vessel through the opening. There are no guide rolls, or other rolls that act on the continuous steel member, in the bath.

Hot dip coating method and apparatus

The molten exterior surface portion of a hot dip galvanized steel strip is solidified after the strip is withdrawn from a bath of molten zinc by spraying finely divided particles of a liquid nucleating agent for initiating solidification. The particles are sprayed into an electrostatic field alongside the strip. The particles are initially directed along a path which avoids impingement against the strip. However, the smaller particles are attracted to the strip under the influence of the electrostatic field, to initiate solidification. The larger particles have a momentum along their path large enough to resist the influence of the electrostatic field, thereby permitting the larger particles to continue along a path which avoids impingement. This minimizes the formation of undesirably large spangles and an undesirable surface appearance on the strip.

An apparatus for electrotreating a metal strip and employing an electrode roll having a metallic outer surface covered by a porous mesh layer composed of electrically non-conductive material and fixedly secured to the outer surface of the electrode roll.

An apparatus and method for electro-treating one surface of a metal strip alone or both surfaces sequentially. Another embodiment electro-treats both surfaces simultaneously. All embodiments employ a roll having an electrically conducting outer surface around a substantial portion of which is wrapped the strip. An electrically insulating mesh layer is interposed between the strip and the roll's outer surface, and electrolytic liquid floods the openings in the mesh layer and is retained there by that portion of the strip which is wrapped around the roll. The strip is advanced in a downstream direction, and the roll is simultaneously rotated. The strip and the outer surface of the roll are electrically charged with opposite polarities, but neither one is immersed in a bath of electrolytic liquid. Cations flow between the roll and the wrapped-around portion of the strip through the liquid in the openings of the mesh layer.
