A hard member for use as a wear part or a hard insert for a point attack style of tool or a rotary style of tool. The hard member having a composition of between about 5 volume percent and about 40 volume percent binder alloy, and between about 60 volume percent and about 95 volume percent tungsten carbide. The tungsten carbide has an average grain size between about 1 micrometer and about 30 micrometers. The binder alloy comprises an alloy of nickel and chromium wherein the nickel ranges between about 70 weight percent and less than 93 weight percent and the chromium ranges between greater than 7 weight percent and about 30 weight percent.

A cutting tool for milling titanium and titanium alloys which includes a substrate that comprises tungsten carbide and cobalt. The substrate further includes cobalt in the range of between 5.7 to 6.3 weight percent and chromium in the range of between 0.3 and 0.5 weight percent. The cutting tool has a coating of tungsten carbide applied to the substrate by physical vapor deposition.

Cutting insert for milling titanium and titanium alloys

A coated cutting tool that has a rake face and a flank face with a cutting edge at the juncture of the rake and flanks faces, a substrate, and a coating bonded to the substrate. The coating has a coating scheme that includes a layer of a Group IVB metal-aluminum alloy applied by physical vapor deposition, and a layer of alumina applied by physical vapor deposition to the layer of the Group IVB metal-aluminum alloy.

A coated cutting tool, as well as a method for making tool and a method for the milling of ductile iron using the cutting tool wherein the cutting tool includes a rake face and a flank face with a cutting edge at the juncture there. The cutting tool also presents a coating and a substrate. The substrate comprises a tungsten carbide based cemented carbide having a bulk composition of no more than 7 weight percent tantalum, no more than 3 weight percent niobium, no more than 5 weight percent titanium, no more than 1 weight percent chromium, between about 5 and about 13 weight percent cobalt, and the balance tungsten carbide. The coating has an innermost coating scheme including at least one layer adjacent to the substrate, and an outermost layer comprising titanium carbide applied by chemical vapor deposition layer.

Coated cutting tool having an outer layer of TiC

A cutting tool for machining titanium and titanium alloys which comprises a tungsten carbide-containing substrate alone or with a tungsten carbide tip brazed thereto. The cutting tool further includes a hard coating on either the substrate alone or on the tungsten carbide tip. The coating may be PVD-applied tungsten carbide, CVD-applied boron carbide or PVD-applied boron carbide.

Cutting tool for machining titanium and titanium alloys

An indexable metalcutting insert is provided having a cobalt cemented tungsten carbide substrate wit a multilayer refractory coating thereon. The substrate has a cobalt content of 6.1 to 6.5 weight percent and is characterized by a hardness of 90.8 to 91.6 Rockwell A and a magnetic coercive force of 110 to 180 oerstads. The coating contains at least a plurality of alumina layers which are separated from and bonded to each other by a group IVB metal nitride, such as titanium nitride, and which are bonded to the substrate by a backing layer of 5 to 8 .mu. in thickness, composed of a carbide and/or carbonitride of titanium, zirconium and/or hafnium.
