A method of providing an adhesive resin and methods of providing glue mixes useful in plywood manufacture are provided. Also provided is a method of manufacturing plywood. An alkyl glycoside, e.g. methyl glucoside, is utilized in various ways in the manufacture of an adhesive resin, a glue mix and/or, a plywood panel to contribute various properties thereto. The plywood panel is useful as a structural material in a variety of settings.

Methods of making and using adhesive resins and glue mixes

The present invention relates to the preparation of aldoside mixtures, recovering at least a portion of one aldoside component therefrom and reusing the remaining portion of the aldoside mixture to prepare additional aldoside. The aldoside mixture may be prepared by slurrying the carbohydrate in alcohol and passing the slurry through a continuous reactor at an elevated temperature under fluid pressure in the presence of an acid catalyst. The resultant aldoside mixture may then be partitioned into a mother liquor portion and an aldoside portion by selectively recovering at least a portion of one aldoside from the crude aldoside mixture with the remaining mother liquor being recycled. Crude glycoside mixtures prepared from starch and methanol slurries are suitable substrates for selectively recovering methyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside. The methyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside may be easily crystallized and recovered from the glycoside mixture because of its lower solubility in methanol. The resultant mother liquor (rich in the remaining components of the glycoside mixture) in combination with freshly added starch and methanol provides a reaction medium which optimizes methyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside production.

Method of using recycled mother liquors to produce aldosides

A continuous process for making alkyl aldosides from polysaccharides and more particularly mixed alkyl glycosides from starch by direct alcoholysis. A polysaccharide, such as starch, is slurried in an alcohol and passed through a heated, confined zone under pressure in the presence of an acid catalyst to form a mixed alkyl aldoside. The alcohols which may be used include methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol, their isomers and mixtures thereof. Higher alkyl glycosides are surfactants and, in some instances, it is advantageous to use higher alcohols, such as decyl and dodecyl alcohols, to obtain particular surfactant properties in the resulting alkyl glycosides. Mixed alkyl glycosides are useful in detergent applications, and as backbone polymers in polyurethane foams.

Vegetable based, remoistenable adhesive for pregummed tape

A pregummed, remoistenable tape having long open time and short tack time which utilizes adhesive formulations using acid hydrolyzed, derivatized waxy maize starch as a component to replace animal glue in remoistenable pregummed tape formulations. Wet tack strength is equal or better than 'all-animal glue' adhesives presently used, especially for short open times. In one embodiment, the major ingredient in the adhesive coating of the pregummed tape comprises waxy maize starch which is first acid-hydrolyzed and then copolymerized with acrylamide monomer using a free radical initiator in an aqueous system. In another second embodiment, acid-hydrolyzed, cyanoethylated waxy maize starch provides the major adhesive ingredient which replaces a substantial portion of the animal glue in the adhesive composition used to coat the pregummed tape. It is also contemplated that substantially all of the animal glue in the new formulation can be replaced for certain applications with a synthetic organic compound such as polyvinyl alcohol. These combination vegetable-animal base adhesives and the vegetable synthetic type adhesives may be used to replace animal glue based adhesives, and provide improved machinability, less odor, easier remoistenability of the pregummed tape under cold room conditions and improved aging. Of the many modified starch combinations tested, on remoistenable pregummed tapes the acid-hydrolyzed, cyanoethylated starch derivative and acid-hydrolyzed, acrylamide-starch graft copolymers performed the best, especially in combination with small amounts of animal glue.
