A method of conditioning a process stream of air in an air conditioning system wherein a process stream of air is dehumidified and cooled to provide a conditioned stream of air for introducing to a conditioned space. The method comprises the steps of providing an adsorption wheel having a multiplicity of passages through which process air can flow for adsorbing moisture therefrom, the wheel capable of adsorption of moisture from the process air and of regeneration on a continuous basis as the wheel rotates. An indirect evaporative cooler is provided having a dry side and a wet side separated by a moisture-inpervious wall wherein heat is extracted from said dry side through the wall to the wet side. Cooling in the dry side is achieved by evaporation of water into air passing through the wet side. The process air is passed through the adsorption wheel to remove moisture therefrom to provide a moisture-depleted stream of process air exiting the adsorption wheel. The adsorption wheel is regenerated by passing hot gases therethrough to remove moisture from the adsorption wheel. The moisturedepleted stream of process air exiting said adsorption wheel is divided into a relatively hot stream and a relatively cool stream, and the relatively hot stream of process air is introduced into the wet side of the indirect evaporative cooler, and the relatively cool stream is introduced into the dry side, the relatively hot stream evaporating water thereinto thereby cooling the moisture-impervious wall and removing heat from the relatively cool stream to provide cooled air to be introduced to a conditioned space.

Air conditioning system having improved indirect evaporative cooler

A method of conditioning a process stream of air in an air conditioning system wherein a process stream of air is dehumidified and cooled to provide a conditioned stream of air for introducing to a conditioned space. The method comprises the steps of providing an adsorption wheel having a multiplicity of passages through which process air can flow for adsorbing moisture therefrom, the wheel capable of adsorption of moisture from the process air and of regeneration on a continuous basis as the wheel rotates. An indirect evaporative cooler is provided having a dry side and a wet side separated by a moisture-impervious wall wherein heat is extracted from said dry side through the wall to the wet side. Cooling in the dry side is achieved by evaporation of water into air passing through the wet side. The process air is passed through the adsorption wheel to remove moisture therefrom to provide a moisture-depleted stream of process air exiting the adsorption wheel. The adsorption wheel is regenerated by passing hot gases therethrough to remove moisture from the adsorption wheel. The moisture-depleted stream of process air exiting said adsorption wheel is divided into a relatively hot stream and a relatively cool stream, and the relatively hot stream of process air is introduced into the wet side of the indirect evaporative cooler, and the relatively cool stream is introduced into the dry side, the relatively hot stream evaporating water thereinto thereby cooling the moisture-impervious wall and removing heat from the relatively cool stream to provide cooled air to be introduced to a conditioned space.

Air conditioning system having indirect evaporative cooler

A method of conditioning a process stream of air in an air conditioning system wherein the process stream of air is dehumidified and cooled to provide a conditioned stream of air, the method comprising providing an adsorption wheel having a multiplicity of passages through which the process air can flow for adsorbing moisture therefrom, the wheel capable of adsorption of moisture from the process air and of regeneration on a continuous basis as the wheel rotates. The method further comprises passing a first portion and a second portion of the process air to be conditioned through the wheel to remove moisture therefrom, the first portion of the process air passing through the wheel after the regeneration to remove beat from the wheel prior to the second portion passing through the adsorption wheel; then introducing the first portion of the process air to a heat exchanger to remove heat from the first portion. A second stream of air is directed through the heat exchanger to remove heat therefrom to provide a second heated air stream. The second heated air stream is heated with a heater to provide hot gases having a temperature sufficient to regenerate the adsorption wheel. The wheel is regenerated by passing the hot gases therethrough to remove moisture from the adsorption wheel. The first portion of the process air after passing through the heat exchanger and the second portion of the process air after passing through adsorption wheel is directed to an evaporative cooler, the process air is cooled to provide a stream of air having a controlled level of humidity.

Method and apparatus for cooling warm moisture-laden air

A method of conditioning a process stream of air in an air conditioning system wherein a process stream of air is dehumidified and cooled to provide a conditioned stream of air for introducing to a conditioned space, the method comprises the steps of providing an enthalpy wheel comprised of an adsorbent contained in a paper web, the enthalpy wheel having a multiplicity of passages through which the process air can flow, the enthalpy wheel capable of regeneration by passing an air stream therethrough having a temperature and humidity lower than the process air. In the method, process air is passed through the enthalpy wheel to remove heat and moisture therefrom, and the enthalpy wheel is regenerated by passing air therethrough to remove heat and moisture therefrom. Thereafter, the method includes providing an adsorption wheel having a multiplicity of passages through which the process air from the enthalpy wheel can flow for adsorbing moisture, the wheel capable of adsorption of moisture from the process air and of regeneration. Process air from the enthalpy wheel is passed through the adsorption wheel to remove moisture, and the adsorption wheel is regenerated by passing hot gases therethrough to remove moisture. After passing through the adsorption wheel, process air is introduced to an indirect evaporative cooler having a dry channel and a wet channel separated by a moisture-impervious wall wherein heat is extracted from the dry channel through the wall to the wet channel, the process air from the adsorption wheel being introduced to the dry channel to provide cooled process air exiting the indirect evaporative cooler to provide a cooled stream of air having a controlled level of humidity. Air is directed to the wet channel of the indirect evaporative cooler, the air directed to the wet channel being selected from at least one of outside air, air returned from the conditioned space, a portion of the air from the enthalpy wheel, and a portion of the cooled air exiting the dry side of the indirect evaporative cooler.

Thermally regenerated desiccant air conditioner with indirect

A heat recovery and dehumidifier system for ventilating fresh air to a conditioned space. The system is comprised of an enthalpy wheel or body for treating incoming fresh air to remove heat and moisture therefrom and a duct for introducing fresh air to a first segment of the enthalpy wheel or body. An evaporator coil is in communication with the enthalpy wheel or body to receive fresh air having heat and moisture removed therefrom, the evaporator coil further lowering the temperature of said fresh air and a subcooling coil is provided in communication with the evaporator coil to receive fresh air from said evaporator coil, said subcooling coil treating the fresh air to provide conditioned fresh air having the temperature thereof raised after leaving the evaporator coil, the subcooling coil in communication with said space to be conditioned to supply the conditioned fresh air thereto. Means is provided for returning air from said conditioned space to the enthalpy wheel or body thereby providing a return air and means is provided for passing the return air through a segment of said enthalpy wheel or body to exchange sensible and latent heat from the return air to the enthalpy wheel or body thereby cooling the enthalpy wheel or body. The return air is exhausted to the atmosphere after passing through the enthalpy wheel or body.

High efficiency outdoor air conditioning system

A heat recovery, dehumidifier and cooling system for ventilating fresh air to a conditioned space. The system is comprised of an enthalpy wheel or body for treating incoming fresh air to remove heat and moisture therefrom and means such as a duct for introducing fresh air to a first segment of the enthalpy wheel or body. A heat exchanger is provided in communication with the enthalpy wheel or body to receive pre-conditioned air having heat and moisture removed therefrom, the heat exchanger further lowering the temperature of the pre-conditioned air. A refrigerated surface is provided in a first communication with the heat exchanger to receive pre-conditioned air exiting from the sensible heat exchanger, the refrigerated surface further treating the pre-conditioned air to provide refrigerated air leaving the refrigerated surface having both lowered temperature and humidity. The refrigerated surface is provided in second communication with the heat exchanger to permit the refrigerated air leaving the refrigerator surface to be in heat exchange relationship with the pre-conditioned air from the enthalpy wheel or body as the pre-conditioned air passes through the sensible heat exchanger, the pre-conditioned air warming the refrigerated air as the conditioned air passes through the sensible heat exchanger to provide conditioned air.

High efficiency air conditioning system with humidity control

A method of conditioning a process stream of air in an air conditioning system wherein the process stream of air is dehumidified and cooled to provide a conditioned stream of air, the method comprising providing an adsorption wheel having a multiplicity of passages through which the process air can flow for adsorbing moisture therefrom, the wheel capable of adsorption of moisture from the process air and of regeneration on a continuous basis as the wheel rotates. The method further comprises passing a first portion and a second portion of the process air to be conditioned through the wheel to remove moisture therefrom, the first portion of the process air passing through the wheel after the regeneration to remove heat from the wheel prior to the second portion passing through the adsorption wheel; then introducing the first portion of the process air to a heat exchanger to remove heat from the first portion. A second stream of air is directed through the heat exchanger to remove heat therefrom to provide a second heated air stream. The second heated air stream is heated with a heater to provide hot gases having a temperature sufficient to regenerate the adsorption wheel. The wheel is regenerated by passing the hot gases therethrough to remove moisture from the adsorption wheel. The first portion of the process air after passing through the heat exchanger and the second portion of the process air after passing through adsorption wheel is directed to an evaporative cooler, the process air is cooled to provide a stream of air having a controlled level of humidity.

A sensible and latent heat exchange or adsorbent media formed from an improved desiccant or adsorbent paper having higher strength and thinner gauge to provide increased area of media, the media having a multiplicity of passageways therethrough through which an air stream can flow. The improved desiccant or adsorbent paper is comprised of fibrillated and non-fibrillated organic fibers formed to provide an improved support material having improved levels of strength and higher levels of desiccant or adsorbent material contained in the improved fibrous support material to provide the improved paper. The system is capable of adsorbing or transferring sensible heat from a warm air stream and releasing or transferring the absorbed sensible heat into a cool air stream as the air stream flows through the system, Further, the desiccant or adsorbent material is capable of adsorbing moisture from a humid air stream flowing through the system and capable of releasing the adsorbed moisture into a dry air stream flowing through the passageways of the system.

High strength, low pressure drop adsorbent wheel

A sensible and latent heat exchange or adsorbent media formed from an improved desiccant or adsorbent paper having higher strength and thinner gauge to provide increased area of media, the media having a multiplicity of passageways therethrough through which an air stream can flow. The improved desiccant or adsorbent paper is comprised of fibrillated organic fibers formed to provide an improved support material having improved levels of strength and higher levels of desiccant or adsorbent material contained in the improved fibrous support material to provide the improved paper. The improved desiccant paper is capable of adsorbing or transferring sensible heat from a warm air stream and releasing or transferring the absorbed sensible heat into a cool air stream as the air stream flows though the sensible and latent heat exchange media. Further, the desiccant or adsorbent material is capable of adsorbing moisture from a humid air stream flowing through the sensible and latent heat exchange media and capable of releasing the adsorbed moisture into a dry air stream flowing through the passageways of the sensible and latent heat exchange media.

High strength, low pressure drop sensible and latent heat exchange wheel

An improved adsorbent composition for a natural gas-fired, adsorption cooling system that readily adsorbs moisture from ambient air, while being readily regenerated at high temperatures up to 200.degree.-300.degree. C. in order to provide an enhanced coefficient of performance to the system. Such an adsorbent composition may comprise an A-type zeolite, an X-type zeolite or a chemically modified Y-type zeolite either alone, in conjunction with each other or in conjunction with alumina and/or silica gel. A rotating adsorbent wheel may be fashioned from corrugated paper comprising the adsorbent composition and a slurry of synthetic, organic fibers which are preferably polyaramid fibers. The strength of the wheel may be enhanced by surface treating it with sols or salt solutions of alumina or silica, and a highly temperature-stable epoxy or phenolic resin.

Adsorption air conditioning system

Disclosed is a gas permeable, sensible and latent heat exchange media having a multiplicity of passageways therethrough through which an air stream can flow, the sensible and latent heat exchange media. The heat exchange media comprises a fibrous support material, a finely powdered desiccant material and fire retardant contained in the fibrous support material. The fibrous support material and the fire retardant are capable of adsorbing sensible heat from a warm air stream and releasing the absorbed sensible heat into a cool air stream as the air stream flows through the sensible and latent heat exchange media. The desiccant material is capable of adsorbing moisture from a humid air stream flowing through the sensible and latent heat exchange media and capable of releasing the adsorbed moisture into a dry air stream flowing through the passageways of the sensible and latent heat exchange media.

Enthalphy Wheel

A filter for removing contaminants from a gas contains a support material and, deposited on the support material, a first component which is an oxide, a hydroxide or a mixture of an oxide and hydroxide of Al, Si, Ti, Fe or Zn, containing at least about 0.5% by weight of water. The first component is deposited onto the filter preferably from a colloidal sol solution of a compound of the metal of that component. The first component acts as an adsorbent to remove contaminants from a gas, such as air. The filter may contain a second component, such as an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, permanganate(s), or a mixture thereof. The filter may also contain a third component, such as an adsorbent, in the form of separate particles, e.g., activated charcoal, potassium permanganate, activated alumina, optionally treated with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound(s), zeolites, and alumino-silicate compositions. The filter is preferably used to remove contaminants from the air in central forced air systems in residential and commercial construction.
