A gas spring particularly for jumping stilts comprises a working cylinder and a plunger. In the working cylinder there is a working chamber containing a mass of gas. A gas exchange chamber is fixed with respect to the working cylinder. An exchange passage connects the working chamber and the gas exchange chamber. A gas exchange valve is provided in the exchange passage. An exchange operating handle is provided separate from the plunger.

Gas spring of variable spring force

A piston for a pneumatic, hydraulic or hydropneumatic fluid-filled cylinder includes a constantly open throttled passage therethrough comprised by at least one spiral-shaped throttled channel extending in a plane perpendicular to the piston axis. The spiral configuration of the throttled channel permits the use of a relatively large flow cross section in the channel, thereby preventing clogging of the throttling passage by contaminants entrained in the damping medium, while still providing the desired damping effect.

Piston for a pneumatic, hydraulic, or hydropneumatic installation

In the illustrative embodiments of the invention described, a gas spring useful as a height-adjustment and weight-compensation device, as, for example, in a height-adjustable table, includes structure that is responsive to the drop in gas pressure within the primary cylinder below a predetermined level to lock or brake the piston rod against abrupt movement with respect to the primary cylinder if a compressive load is thereafter applied to the gas spring. The pressure-responsive structure preferably includes a sealed auxiliary cylinder-piston unit carried by the piston rod internally of the gas spring. The auxiliary unit contains a separate pressurized body of gas, and either the auxiliary cylinder or piston is axially movable, in response to the greater internal pressure within the auxiliary unit when gas pressure within the primary cylinder drops too low, to engage the locking or braking device. So long as gas pressure within the primary cylinder remains above the predetermined minimum level, the braking device is biased away from the engaged position.

In the illustrative embodiment of a current-carrying pneumatic spring disclosed, flow of electric current between external terminals on the cylinder member and piston rod member of the spring is provided by a contact element fixed on one of the members and carrying one or more contact faces which are resiliently biased into sliding engagement with an axially elongated face portion of the other member. Flow of electric current between the external terminals may thereby be provided over a range of positions or over all positions of axial movement of the piston rod member inward and outward of the cylinder cavity.
