The use of metal particles inside the belt back () of a force transmission belt () serves primarily to protect the belt from overheating in transient temperatures of between 100&#xb0; C. and approximately 400&#xb0; C. which can occur during operation in motor vehicle engine compartments and in the heat radiation region of exhaust systems.
