A flexible plate is securable to a cylinder by insertion of fastening tabs, provided on beveled or angled ends of the plate, into cooperatively shaped end positioned pockets on the cylinder surface. The pockets may be formed by insert strips that utilize spaced tines to define the individual pockets.

A flexible plate is securable to a cylinder by insertion of fastening tabs, provided on beveled or angled ends of the plate, into cooperatively shaped and positioned pockets on the cylinder surface. The fastening tabs are spaced axially by interposed tongue and cut-outs. These spaced tabs and tongues form an axially discontinuous joint across the width of the cylinder on which the flexible plate or plates are positioned.

An inking bar for a flush inking unit in a rotary printing press utilizes a profiled body which is situated in an ink distributing chamber in the inking bar to minimize turbulence in the ink. This profiled body is pivotably or rotatably carried in the ink distributing chamber so that the pressure between its surface and a cooperating surface of the screened surface ink fountain roller can be varied.

An ink transfer volume measuring assembly utilizes a front, resilient surfaced roller and a rear, hard surfaced roller carried in a hand held, portable housing. The front roller is pried against the surface of a screened ink roller and receives ink therefrom. This ink is transferred from the soft front roller to the rear hard roller where it is scraped off by a doctor blade. The ink removed from the rear roller is deposited in a collecting container where its volume is measured by using a float that carries an indicating pointer. A revolution counter is driven by the front roller to provide a measurement of collection time.

An ink dividing assembly for an inking roller in an ink fountain of a rotary printing press is disclosed. One or more inking bars are positioned adjacent the ink roller and carry doctor blades. Thin ink dividing plates are slideably carried in guide depressions formed by guide plates attached to the ends of the inking bars. A front surface of each ink divider plate is curved and sealingly engages the peripheral surface of the inking roller. The ink dividing plates may be spring biased in the guide depressions into contact with the ink roller.

A wire stapling apparatus for use in forming and inserting wire staples in separate signatures, each signature comprising a plurality of sheet layers and with the staples being inserted in the signatures in the direction of motion of the signatures, is disclosed. The apparatus includes a rotating staple closing cylinder and a rotating wire stapling cylinder which cooperates with the staple closing cylinder.

A staple closing mechanism for use in a longitudinal stapling apparatus for inserting and closing staples in a product conveyed at a uniform speed is disclosed. The staple closing mechanism includes a staple closing cylinder and a staple conveyor cylinder which cooperate to define a path through which the product is conveyed. The closing cylinder carries a rigid staple shank bending insert and a rotatable staple shank bending device. A staple driving die is carried by the staple conveyor cylinder.

A wire stapling apparatus for use in forming and inserting wire staples in folded copies is disclosed. The apparatus includes a rotating staple closing cylinder and a rotating wire stapling cylinder which cooperates with a wire staple forming piece to form a staple from a section of staple wire. The wire stapling cylinder carries a rotatable staple driving punch which rotates 90.degree. between a staple receiving position and a staple driving position. The staple driving punch also reciprocates in the stapling cylinder to insert the staple into the folded product to be stapled. The staple closing cylinder carries suitable fixed and rotating staple shank bending devices.

Wire stapling apparatus

A method and apparatus for threading web materials for use in a web-fed rotary printing press is disclosed. A plurality of finite length, flexible conveyors are secured to the press frame, extend between first and second storage devices, and are guided by suitable guides. Drive motors for transporting the conveyors are positioned at either end of the path of web threading and additional drive motors are positioned intermediate the end motors. The web to be transported is secured to the conveyor and suitable ones of the drive motors are actuated to withdraw the conveyor from the first storage device and into the second storage device whereby the web attached thereto is threaded through the assembly. The path of web threading may be varied by connecting various of the conveyors which extend along differing paths through the press.

An apparatus for use in trimming the edges of folded signatures produced in web-fed rotary printing presses is disclosed. The signatures, which may exit from the printing press folder in an overlapping array, are supported from below by a conveyor belt or belts and are held from above by coacting hold-down belts. The signatures so positioned are moved past rotating chipping or cutting tools which remove excess material from the edges of the signatures. Either one or two chipping or cutting tools can be used and the apparatus is capable of trimming without reducing the production speed of the press which may be in the range of 40,000 signatures/hour.
