Process for the work-up of hydrogen-sulfide containing gases which are normally subjected to Claus process, reduction, absorption, and desorption, characterized in that a portion of the feed gases by-passes the Claus unit and is processed in a CO.sub.2 -selective secondary absorption-desorption procedure.

Process for working-up hydrogen sulphide-containing gases

An apparatus for the removal of particulate matter and sulfur oxides from waste gases is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a vessel for cross-current contacting of the waste gas with a moving bed of acceptor for sulfur oxides, and separate processing chambers for removal of the particulate matter from the loaded acceptor, for the removal of sulfur oxides for the loaded acceptor, and for reactivating the acceptor.

Removal of sulfur oxides and particulate matter from waste gas streams

An improved process is described for reducing the total sulfur content of off-gases from a Claus process by catalytically converting the sulfur compounds contained in the off-gases to hydrogen sulfide and selectively absorbing the hydrogen sulfide with a regenerable polyalkanolamine adsorbent solution; the hydrogen sulfide enriched adsorbent being regenerated and used again for further adsorption of hydrogen sulfide and the hydrogen sulfide-rich gas mixture liberated in regeneration being passed to a Claus process. This improved process is characterized in that the hydrogen sulfide enriched polyalkanolamine solution from adsorption of the reduced Claus off-gases is further enriched in hydrogen sulfide content prior to regeneration by contacting it with a stream which contains hydrogen sulfide at a higher partial pressure than that of the reduced Claus off-gases.

Process for H.sub.2 S removal employing a regenerable polyalkanolamine

A process for the removal of particulate matter and sulfur oxides from waste gases is disclosed which comprises cross-current contacting of the waste gas stream with a moving bed of supported, copper-containing acceptor in a first zone, thereby accepting the sulfur oxides and filtering out the particulate matter, removing in subsequent separate zones the particulate matter and the sulfur oxides from the acceptor and, optionally, reactivating the acceptor in a subsequent zone before introducing it back into the first zone for further removal of sulfur oxides and particulate matter. An apparatus suitable for carrying out the process is also described.

An improved Claus off-gas treating process is disclosed where sulfur dioxide and other convertible sulfur compounds present in the off-gas are catalytically reduced to hydrogen sulfide by mixing said off-gases with the hot gaseous product of the combustion of a carbonaceous fuel with an oxygen-containing gas in a line burner to heat the off-gases to a temperature above 175.degree.C and passing the heated gaseous product together with a hydrogen-containing gas over a reduction catalyst thereby converting substantially all of the sulfur dioxide and other convertible sulfur compounds present to hydrogen sulfide which is subsequently removed with an absorbent or absorbent for hydrogen sulfide. The improvement comprises introducing hydrogen-containing gas required in the catalytic reduction step directly into the line burner at a point where the temperature of the gaseous product of combustion is sufficiently high to support spontaneous combustion between the hydrogen so introduced and any excess oxygen which may be present in the combustion product.
