An in situ traveling paper machine web is stabilized from flutter and vibration for the purpose of formation and optical property measurement by an air flow system by which a boundary layer air stream between a sole plate and the adjacent web surface secures the web in a stable position.

Box machine forming wheels are individually stabilized with a respective, frame mounted, stationary yoke meshed within the circumferential groove of a head wheel that is rigidly secured to the forming wheel. Lateral space between the stationary yoke finger faces and the rotating groove walls is adjustably filled by cam displaced disc pads confined within yoke finger guide bores. Selective cam rotation expands the disc pad assembly for operational wear accommodation.

Apparatus for forming and fabricating single-faced paperboard, the lower corrugating roll is provided with numerous circumferential grooves which are partially evacuated beneath a traveling overlayment of paper web for the purpose of holding the web tightly against the corrugated roll profile. These grooves are evacuated by groove evacuation tubes connected with one or more vacuum manifolds. Such evacuation tubes have flared, tubular distal ends to match the slotted socket of respective tube holders. Each holder also includes a spring loaded mandrel to secure each tube in its respective socket in such a manner as to permit rapid removal and replacement of such tubes.

In the fabrication of double-faced corrugated paperboard, the exposed flute tips of single-faced corrugated board are prepared with a coating of liquid adhesive to receive a second liner web. To press the flute tips uniformly against the adhesive film coated surface of a glue applicator roll, pressure is applied by a segmented air bearing wherein multiple air bearing shoe segments are resiliently secured to a common manifold air source.

Back pressure against a single-faced, corrugated web opposite of a flute tip glue applicator roll is provided by a transversely extending air bearing. Air bearing fluid flow is derived from an air distributor manifold that is secured for adjustable positionment relative to the web surface.

Large, paper mill reels of product are protectively wrapped for shipment by capping the reel ends with a header sheet of larger area than that reel end face circle to pleat a flange portion of the header sheet onto the cylindrical surface of reel with a resilient planar element having a freely suspended, circumferentially expansible aperture drawn coaxially over the header sheet and reel to wipe the header sheet flange onto the reel cylindrical surface.

Method and apparatus for wrapping paper rolls

A portable coating apparatus is described for use with a paper converting machine such as a corrugated paperboard double-backer. Rotational power to drive gravure, transfer and smoothing rolls is extracted from the converting machine supply web by an S-wrap through the loaded nip between a pair of drive rolls. A low-powered auxiliary drive motor is automatically engaged to keep the gravure and transfer rolls conditioned with coating during brief intervals of web feed cessation. The entire unit is constructed on a space frame that is supported by caster wheels to facilitate movement to and from an appropriate converting machine position which may be between the reeled web supply unwind stand and a web preheating drum station leading into a double-backing machine.

Bales of wood pulp built from successive wafers of bulk dried pulp may be shredded to small, easily mulched particles by raking a bale face with spaced claws along a plane parallel with the wafer interface. Claws are secured to a power reciprocated bar in pairs with claw points directed along opposite reciprocation directions. The bale is advanced against the traverse plane of the claws in increments coordinated with full reciprocation strokes of the claw bar.

In a corrugated board machine, the stripper finger relief grooves of an adhesive applicator roll may be quickly meshed with corresponding fingers when the applicator roll is to be returned to operating position by use of a manually manipulated alignment guide which confines the fingers laterally to the correct spatial alignment with corresponding grooves.

The angular position of a wrap control roll about a paper web preheating roll is remotely adjusted to any one of a plurality of predetermined set positions by an index control over the adjustment power train. The index conrol comprises a remote positioned, console mounted rotary switch having contact positions corresponding to the predetermined wrap control roll set positions. Cooperative switches mounted in an adjustment drive follower mechanism continue the circuit continuity to a solenoid activated drive motor reversing switch. A breaker unit within the follower mechanism is directly driven by the adjustment power train to open the motor switch when the breaker unit is correctly aligned with the desired set position.

Corrugating machine stripper fingers are divided into two arcuate segments. Each segment is pivotally mounted. Both segments may pivot individually relative to the machine frame or one segment may be mounted relative to the machine frame and the other mounted relative to the first segment. Both segments are resiliently biased toward the respective corrugating roll surface.
