Methods and systems for determining a physiological parameter of a subject through interrogation of an eye of the subject with an optical signal are described. Interrogation is performed unobtrusively. The physiological parameter is determined from a signal sensed from the eye of a subject according to a schedule, under the control of a scheduling controller.

Unobtrusive active eye interrogation

Methods and systems for determining a physiological parameter of a subject through interrogation of an eye of the subject with an optical signal are described. Interrogation is performed unobtrusively. The physiological parameter is determined from a signal sensed from the eye of a subject when the eye of the subject is properly aligned with regard to an interrogation signal source and/or response signal sensor.

Modifications to power plants for moderating climate warming and increasing safety combine a large compressed air energy storage (CAES) system with a thermal power plant such that free power plant waste heat replaces natural gas used at existing and planned CAES facilities. The system allows higher percentages of wind and solar energy on existing grids. The compressed air in a companion CAES can cool a nuclear reactor during an emergency. Also an inexpensive, add-on, external, Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) can cool a nuclear reactor after shutdown, even when all internal cooling water circulation has been disabled. All embodiments are installed outside the plant where they will not be damaged in the event of a plant accident. Both systems use environmentally friendly compressed air energy storage in new ways, and can be built and installed quickly around the world at existing plants using only proven infrastructure.

Compressed air, utility-scale, non-polluting energy storage and nuclear reactor emergency cooling system using thermal power plant waste heat

A passive safety system for a nuclear power plant () cools the plant after shutdown, even when primary water circulation is disabled. The system comprises a source of compressed gas () which can be the system's only source of operating energy, a source of external cooling water (), and interconnection components. If the reactor overheats, the gas is used to force the cooling water into the reactor's core. The gas can be taken from a highly compressed source and decompressed to a lower pressure suitable for forcing the water from the source, in which case the water can first be used to supply heat to the expanding gas to prevent it from freezing its environment. The system can be located underground or can be portable, e.g., carried on railroad cars or other wheeled conveyances. The system can be located above ground, or in a covered trench ().

Cooling overheating reactor using compressed gas to propel liquid to reactor

A passive safety system for a nuclear power plant () cools a nuclear power plant after shutdown (SCRAM) even when all primary water circulation has been disabled. The system comprises a source of compressed gas () that can be its only source of operating energy, a source of water (), and a plurality of plumbing components. The system is located nearby but outside of the plant where it will not be damaged in the event of an accident inside the plant. In one embodiment, the system is located underground. In another embodiment, the system is portable so that the gas and water are carried in tanks () on railroad cars or other wheeled conveyances. The portable system is located above ground, or optionally in a covered trench (). In an alternative embodiment, only compressed gas is used to cool the plant.

Time-based unobtrusive active eye interrogation

Methods and system for determining a physiological parameter of a subject through interrogation of an eye of the subject with an optical signal are described. Interrogation is performed unobtrusively. The gaze direction of the eye of the subject is determined and an interrogation signal source and/or response signal sensor are moved into alignment with the eye using an actuator to facilitate detection of the signal from the eye of the subject.

Self-aligning unobtrusive active eye interrogation

A system for altering water properties in an outdoor body of water includes a holding vessel configured to hold water. The holding vessel has at least one wall extending above a mean surface water level. The system also includes at least one conduit extending downward from the holding vessel. The at least one conduit has a length extending to a depth at which at least one property of water at the depth differs substantially from that of water at the surface. The system further includes at least one aperture formed in at least one of the holding vessel or the at least one conduit and located at a distance below the mean surface water level. Further still, the system includes at least one one way valve coupled to the at least one aperture and allowing flow of water in only one direction.

Water alteration structure and system having below surface valves or wave reflectors

A system is described generally for providing a structure or structures for altering water surface temperature. The system includes a holding vessel configured to hold water. The holding vessel has at least one wall coupled to a lowermost portion. The at least one wall extends above the water level and the lowermost portion is configured to be submerged. At least one conduit extends from the lower side of the holding vessel. The at least one conduit has a length extending to a depth at which a property of water at the depth is substantially different from that of the water at the surface.

Water alteration structure and system

A method is generally described which includes environmental alteration. The method includes determining a placement of at least one vessel capable of moving water to lower depths in the water via wave induced downwelling. The method also includes placing the at least one vessel in the determined placement. Further, the method includes generating movement of the water adjacent the surface of the water in response to the placing.

A system is described generally for a water capture structure that is configured to capture wave water lapping over at least one wall of the water capture structure.
