A low-profile, insert molded contact block and corresponding printed circuit board assembly are provided for coupling electronic circuitry disposed on printed wiring boards to external electronic devices. The contact block includes a plurality of L-shaped, metal contacts insert molded into a housing. The housing includes bracing members that circumscribe the metal contacts so that at least a portion of the front and rear faces of the metal contacts are exposed between the bracing members. The contact block may be coupled to a printed wiring board in an automated, reflow solder process utilizing automated pick and place equipment. The contact block is placed on the printed wiring board such that the metal contacts are seated on conductive pads with solder paste disposed thereon. The resulting assembly may then be heated in a reflow oven to permanently affix the metal contacts to the conductive pads. The contact block, which can be on the order of 0.6 millimeters thick, can significantly reduce the overall size of the host electronic device.

Low profile contact block for a rechargeable cell of a wireless communication device

This invention includes a hybrid housing for rechargeable battery packs. The housing utilizes thin metal sidewalls with overlaid plastic end walls by way of an insert molding process. In a single cell, lithium-ion application, the resultant battery pack is 4.9% smaller by volume. Each sidewall up to 75% thinner than prior art sidewalls made by way of an injection molding process. The resultant battery housing is thinner and stronger than prior art housings.

This invention includes a cover for a rechargeable battery to facilitate charging. The invention provides a means for coupling a charging plug and battery having different mechanical form factors. Hence, when a battery is inserted into the cover, the charging plug may mechanically couple to the cover, allowing power terminals on the charging plug to engage charging contacts on the battery.

An apparatus for spacing a battery cell includes a cradle member having a top surface, that defines a first indentation, and an opposite bottom surface. The cradle member also has a first ledge portion and an opposite second ledge portion. At least one first cantilever beam extends from the top surface. The first cantilever beam has a first base portion having a first top end and a spaced-apart first bottom end. The first bottom end is connected to the cradle member adjacent the first ledge portion. The first cantilever beam also has a first flexible elongated arm portion extending from the first top end. The first flexible elongated arm portion is directed toward the indentation and has a length sufficient to exert inwardly-directed radial force in a first direction on the battery cell when the battery cell is placed into the indentation. At least one second cantilever beam extends from the top surface. The second cantilever beam has a second base portion having a second top end and a second bottom end, where the second bottom end is connected to the cradle member adjacent the second ledge portion. The second cantilever beam also has a second flexible elongated arm portion extending from the second top end and directed toward the indentation. The second flexible elongated arm portion has a length sufficient to exert inwardly-directed radial force in a second direction, transverse to the first direction, on the battery cell when the battery cell is placed into the indentation.
