A method of storing a substantially real time stream of information signals arranged in separate, consecutive data packets of digital format on a disc like record carrier. A new stream pack (S_PCK) is defined comprising a pack header and a multiple of source packets containing said data packets with corresponding added time stamps related to a time of arrival of said data packets. The pack header comprises data packet retrieval information, such as the number of new source packets in the stream pack and the effect of the start location of the first source packet in the stream pack. Preferably private streamof the MPEG-format is employed for this new stream.

An apparatus includes inputs configured to receive first and second video signals. The first video signal represents a sequence of images having a first size, and the second video signal representing a sequence of images having a second size, the second size being smaller then the first size of the images. As marks representing characteristic points of an AV stream, a mark of the type indicating a point and a mark of the type indicating a section (duration) are provided. The mark of the type indicating a section specifies the domain based on the time stamp of the playback start point of the preset playback domain of the AV stream and on the duration as from the playback start point until the playback end point.

A method for writing an audio/video information stream to an optical disc, and for reading the information from disc. The information stream includes alternative video parts which are recorded in an interleaved manner; an interleaved unit includes angle blocks, each angle block including one portion of each of the alternative video stream parts. For each video portion, entry points are defined. A user is allowed to change from one video stream to another video stream at any moment during the playback of a video portion; the change will be effected at the first entry point after the user command. Thus, it is not necessary to wait until the video portion has been completely played back; thus, it is possible to define large angle block lengths, so that during normal play the jump frequency is reduced.

The invention relates to an apparatus for recording a main file comprising a main information signal and auxiliary files comprising auxiliary signals in a track on a record carrier. The apparatus writes in a first location a block of an auxiliary file comprising a part of an auxiliary information signal having a specific presentation time, in a second location a subsequent block of the corresponding auxiliary file and in at least one location between the first and second location at least one block of the main file comprising a part of the main information signal having a presentation time which corresponds to the presentation time of the auxiliary information signal to be written in the first location. In this way the respective files are interleaved written on the record carrier such that the jumping time between subsequent read actions is significantly reduced. This results in an increase of the effective read bit-rate of a playback device.
