Stereoscopic video data and corresponding depth map data for multi-view auto-stereoscopic displays are coded using a multiplexed asymmetric image frame that combines an image data partition and a depth map data partition, wherein the size of the image data partition is different than the size of the depth map data partition. The image data partition comprises one or more of the input views while the depth map partition comprises at least a portion of the depth map data rotated with respect to the orientation of the image data in the multiplexed output image frame.

There is provided an image encoding system () including an encoder () for receiving input image data and generating corresponding encoded image output data. The encoder includes image processing features () for processing said input image data to generate for each input image therein a plurality of corresponding image layers including at least one basic layer BLOP and at least one enhancement layer ELOP. A system encodes an input video signal by subjecting the input video signal to noise reduction to obtain a noise-reduced signal, and encoding a difference between the noise-reduced signal and a prediction signal to produce an encoded signal. The system then decodes the encoded signal to obtain the prediction signal. In the system, the noise-reduction step comprises arithmetically combining the input video signal with the prediction signal.

Method and arrangement for encoding a video signal

To be able to transmit television pictures in a digital form through a medium having a limited bandwidth, the pictures are subjected to picture transform and to variable-length coding. The picture to be transmitted is converted in this manner into a bit stream comprising code words of variable length. This bit stream is converted into a channel bit stream which is less sensitive to transmission errors. To this end the most significant code words (representing the average luminance and the coarse picture details) of sub-pictures of 8*8 pixels are accommodated at fixed bit positions of the channel bit stream. These code words can be retrieved by simple count-down of the bit positions. The other code words are distributed over the other bit positions. The decoder is relatively simple because the length of each block comprising significant code words is also transmitted. This length is preferably adapted to the extent of picture detail in the sub-picture.

The invention aims at recording a data reduced digital video signal on a longitudinal record carrier (40) by a recording apparatus of the helical scan type. The apparatus is adapted to generate signal blocks of information of the trick play video signal and to generate signal blocks of information of the data reduced digital video signal. A signal block of information of the data reduced digital video signal comprising a first frame (I-frame) and at least one second frame (B- or P frame) of the data reduced digital video signal. The apparatus is adapted to record each time after each other a signal block of information of the digital trick play video signal and a signal block of information of the data reduced digital video signal on the record carrier. A signal block of information of the trick play video signal is recorded in n subsequent tracks (T.sub.2) on the record carrier, where n is a constant integer for which holds n.gtoreq.1, and the directly succeeding signal block of information of the data reduced digital video signal is recorded in m subsequent tracks (T.sub.3 to T.sub.25) directly following the n tracks, where m is an integer larger than 1. The apparatus is further adapted to record the signal block of information of the data reduced digital video signal in such a way in said m tracks that, viewed in the reproduction direction of the tracks on the record carrier, the first frame (I-frame) contained in said signal block is recorded first in the m tracks following the n tracks comprising the trick play video signal and the at least one second frame (B- or P frame) in the signal block is recorded thereafter in the m tracks. m may be variable for subsequent signal blocks of information of the data reduced digital video signal to be recorded on the record carrier. Further, the signal block of information of the data reduced digital video signal recorded in the m subsequent tracks of a group of n+m tracks includes complete frames of information of the data reduced digital video signal. The apparatus is further adapted to carry out an edit mode of operation, where the n trick play tracks (T.sub.2) are used as edit gaps.

By compressing HDTV pictures, they can be recorded on digital SDTV video recorders. Such recorders are widely used in professional studios. The invention relates to a device for formatting the compressed HDTV signal in such a way that the DC values of successive 8*8 picture blocks are processed by SDTV recorders as a smaller but recognizable SDTV sub-picture. Low-cost editing of HDTV programs with standard equipment (SDTV recorders and receivers) is possible with such a device, while the edited final result can be transmitted as a HDTV signal without any further processing operation.

A variable length decoder device receives a stream of variable-length encoded data segments for successive transient storage. The storage is recurrently accessed under control of successive pointers. A decoder is fed by the storage and decodes a stream of data segments each from a respective encoded data segment. Furthermore, in step with the decoding a next pointer is produced as being directly derived from the accessing through reading of a localizer information. The latter again is produced in a preprocessor that sits before the storage, through localizing the data segments and indicating each segment by an associated localizer.
