A mobile machine for compacting ballast comprises a machine frame extending in a longitudinal direction and supported by undercarriages on the track rails, and a ballast bed stabilizing apparatus vertically adjustably mounted on the machine frame. The apparatus comprises a vibrator imparting to the apparatus vibrations extending in a horizontal plane and perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction, flanged rollers spaced apart in a direction extending perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction and supporting the apparatus on the track rails for movement therealong, each flanged roller being mounted on a stub shaft, and a spreading mechanism mounted between the spaced-apart flanged rollers for changing the distance therebetween. According to the invention, the spreading mechanism comprises a multi-position pressure-fluid operated cylinder drive comprising a first cylinder and a second cylinder spaced from first cylinder in the perpendicularly extending direction, a first double-acting piston rod in the first cylinder, a second double-acting piston rod in the second cylinder, and a pivotal connection linking a respective one of the piston rods to a respective one of the stub shafts.

An ballast tamping assembly comprises four independently displaceable ballast tamping units arrayed in a line extending transversely to the machine frame elongation. Each ballast tamping unit comprises a carrier frame, a tamping tool carrier vertically adjustably mounted on the carrier frame, and a pair of vibratory tamping tools mounted on the tamping tool carrier for reciprocation in the track direction. Each vibratory tamping tool has a tamping pick remote from the carrier frame and pivotal about an axis extending in the direction of the machine frame elongation and connected to a pivoting drive, and another tamping pick immediately adjacent the carrier frame and fixedly connected to the tamping tool, the remote tamping pick being pivotal between two end positions delimited by respective stops, a first one of the end positions being immediately adjacent the other tamping pick for immersion of the tamping picks at one rail side and the second end position being remote from the other tamping pick for immersion of the tamping picks at respective rail sides. Independently operable drives are connected to the ballast tamping units for displacing the ballast tamping units in a direction extending transversely to the machine frame elongation.

An apparatus for placing a carriage linked to a frame of a track working machine on a track comprises a rail sensing element mounted on the carriage for sensing a respective track rail, the rail sensing element being positioned in the radial plane of the flanged wheel when the carriage is placed on the track and emitting a control signal in this position. A hydraulic drive for displacing the carriage transversely with respect to the track links the carriage to the track working machine frame. In response to the control signal, the operation of the hydraulic drive and the transverse displacement of the carriage is interrupted.

A mobile machine for leveling, lining and tamping a track switch comprises a machine frame and a track lifting and lining tool carrier frame mounting a pair of flanged lining rollers arranged for supporting the carrier frame on the rails of the main track and for lining engagement with the main track rails, lifting tools including a respective vertically and laterally adjustable clamping element arranged for clamping engagement with the main track rails, and lifting and lining power drives connecting the carrier frame to the machine frame for vertically and laterally adjusting the carrier frame with respect to the machine frame. The machine has a branch track lifting device comprising a laterally adjustable carrier frame, flanged rollers arranged for supporting the carrier frame on one of the rails of the branch track, and a laterally adjustable clamping element including at least one lifting roller arranged on the carrier frame for clamping engagement with the one branch track rail.

A tamping head with a pair of vibratory and reciprocatory tamping tools mounted on a vertically adjustable carrier for immersion in the ballast in the cribs, with the ties positioned between the tools. Each tamping tool is constituted by a lever pivotal in a vertical plane about a transverse pivot, and stops are mounted on the carrier for setting at least three different reciprocating strokes for the tamping tools, with a remote-controlled multi-step drive for setting the stops.
