In a hammer mill (1) for shredding scrap metal, comprising a hammer rotor (5) carrying swing-mounted hammers (12) and arranged to rotate in a housing (2) having an inlet opening (14) for material located on the upwardly-rotating side of the rotor, a screening grid (33) and an impact chute (26) open to the hammer rotor, the risk of breakdown of the hammer mill is reduced without impairing its shredding performance by forming the wall of the impact chute (26) on the side opposite to the inlet opening (14), together with a screening grid (33) extending to the bottom (32) of the housing, as a resiliently yielding outlet wall (28) that can automatically swing outwards.

Hammer mill

A hammer mill assembly for comminuting scrap material is formed with a housing having a material inlet and a material outlet and a rotor mounted for rotation within the housing including hammer means arranged peripherally of the rotor to effect comminuting action upon rotation of the rotor. A reverberation chamber is defined to extend radially outwardly from the rotor with comminuted scrap material entering the inlet being thrust by the rotor into the reverberating chamber wherein the material is deflected by the walls of the chamber and then directed toward the material outlet, which is covered with a classifying grate. The reverberating chamber has a generally box-like configuration opening radially inwardly toward the rotor with the opening of the reverberating chamber extending substantially from the inlet to the outlet of the housing.

A baling press for the production of bound bales of scrap material such as refuse is of the kind which comprises a press box, a press plunger which is movable through the press box to compress refuse fed to the box from a hopper the outlet of which is closed by the plunger as the plunger moves through the press box in a pressing stroke, a press channel which forms an extension of the press box and into which the pressed bales are pushed by the plunger and a binding mechanism disposed between the press box and the press channel for binding the bales as they are pushed into the channel. The press is provided with a separator slide which is movable transversely to the direction of movement of the press plunger and is disposed between the press box and the press channel just upstream of the binding mechanism considered in relation to the direction of pressing movement of the plunger. The slide is movable between an operative position in the path of the plunger and a retracted position clear of this path. When in its operative position, the slide forms at one side an abutment against which the plunger presses the scrap material and has at the other side grooves formed through it for the passage of parts of a binding mechanism to enable a bale on the downstream side of the slide to be bound as it enters the channel.

A rotary hammerbreaker including a plurality of discs driven upon a rotor shaft, a plurality of rods extending through the discs parallel to the rotor shaft and radially spaced therefrom and a plurality of hammers pivotably mounted upon the rods between the discs. The hammerbreaker is provided with a protective device consisting of a plurality of shields each including a hub mounted upon one of the rods between adjacent discs. The shields are formed with a circular segmental flange fixed to the hub extending over a part of the periphery of each of the adjacent discs between which the hub is mounted to protect the disc periphery. The flange has a circumferentially extending portion which is an integral fraction of a whole circle so that a number of the shields can be fitted to a rotary hammerbreaker to provide substantially continuous protection around the periphery of the discs.
