A sintering device for the production of cupular solid electrolytes, which are used to separate anode and cathode compartments in sodium-sulphur cells, is in the form of a jacket tube and is produced from two or more metal oxides or metal hydroxides. The device and method avoid the disadvantages of the prior art sintering devices that are costly to manufacture and in most cases destroy the uniform distribution of the sodium within the soilid electrolyte material.

Electrochemical chemical storage cell or battery of the alkali metal and chalcogen type with an anode space and a cathode separated from each other by an alkali-ion conducting solid electrolyte. The cup-shaped solid electrolyte of beta-aluminum oxide is fastened at its open end in a force-locking manner by means of a joining material to an annular insulating body. The joining material contains a mixture of a glass powder and a ceramic powder suspended in a liquid with high viscosity.

An electrochemical storage cell or battery with one anode chamber containing molten alkali metal as the anolyte and one cathode chamber containing sulfur-containing catholyte substance, the anolyte and catholyte separated by an alkali-ion-conducting solid electrolyte. The cathode chamber is bounded by a cellwall having a protective layer of a light weight metal also serving as a current collector. The light weight metal in the regions in contact with the catholyte is coated with a metallic alloy which under conditions of operation has certain properties of adhesion, conduction, resistance, corrosion and solubility.

Electrochemical storage cell of the alkali metal and chalcogen type with an anode and a cathode chamber separated by a solid electrolyte wall and confined by a metal wall. A first current collector has an outer sub-part which extends outside the reactant chamber enclosed by the solid electrolyte, and an inner sub-part which extends into the interior of this reactant chamber. The outer sub-part and the inner sub-part are connected to an electrically conducting contact element which melts at a predetermined temperature exceeding the operating temperature of the cell. A second current collector is formed by part of the metal wall which confines the other reactant chamber.

To the catholyte substance is added an additive which converts the sulfur chains into an electrically charged state for obtaining electromigration of the sulfur phase. This induces mobilization of the sulfur phase in the cathode chamber and prevents major accumulation of liquid sulfur as an insulator. As a result the cell can be repeatedly recharged with large currents to a greater capacity. Additives are a dienophilic compound or a reaction product of a dienophilic compound and sulfur.

An electrochemical storage cell or battery based on an alkali metal and sulfur having at least one anode chamber and at least one cathode chamber separated from each other by an ion-conducting solid electrolyte, and felt with course-pores and/or low electric conductivity and felt with fine-pores and/or higher electric conductivity located in the cathode chamber, with the felt of coarse-pores and/or low conductivity disposed near the solid electrolyte and the felt of fine-pores and/or higher conductivity disposed further away from the solid electrolyte. This permits rapid and more complete recharging of the cell for covering peak loads in electrical networks.

An electrochemical storage cell or battery based on an alkali metal and sulfur having at least one anode chamber and at least one cathode chamber separated from each other by an ion-conducting solid electrolyte, a felt fabric with capillary activity located in the cathode chamber, and an additive lowering the viscosity of the sulfur in the cathode chamber. Preferred additives are selenium, boron and iodine. Lowering the viscosity of the sulfur permits recharging the cell to a greater capacity.

Electrochemical storage cell or battery based on sodium and sulfur having an anode chamber and a cathode chamber separated from each other by a dividing wall capable of conducting sodium ions, is provided with a screening electrode disposed in the chamber containing sulfur as a reactant between the dividing wall and the outer cell wall of said chamber to electrically screen the cell wall and thereby minimize corrosion of the cell wall.
