To improve on a vent plug system for a cell opening of a storage battery containing a plug element with an inner cartridge and a valve element, to where it is possible without the need for maintaining excessive physical tolerances to assemble it with a minimal number of components m simple fashion while still assuring reliable operation without any major effort, the plug element is provided as a cup-shaped unit with an outer contour shaped to fit into, and seal, the cell opening, with an internal cavity and with a gas port between the cavity and an outside surface. The inner cartridge is essentially cylindrical, has an outer contour shaped to permit insertion in the cavity of the plug element and is provided with a gas passage that opens into the cavity, while the valve element is a separate element retainable in the cavity by the inner cartridge and, as a function of the gas pressure, establishes a gas-flow connection between the gas passage of the inner cartridge and the gas port of the plug element. The inner cartridge and the plug element can be joined in gas-tight fashion, and the inner cartridge features an installation fitting which in the assembled state of the system protrudes at least partially from the cavity of the plug element.

Vent plug system for storage batteries

The invention concerns a plug arrangement for gas-tight closure of a cell vent of a storage battery. To provide a plug arrangement that to the greatest possible extent prevents acid from running out when a storage battery is tipped or turned and at the same time permits sufficient degassing and can also be produced economically, is easy to install and can be adjusted to different battery designs, this invention purposes a plug arrangement for gas-tight closure of a cell vent of a storage battery including a plug that can be used for a seal in the cell vent, an inside of the cell is connected by fluid mechanics to a hollow space made between upper and lower covers of a housing cover for acid deposition through a plug vent in a generating surface of the plug that has a two-way sealed membrane.

Plug arrangement for a cell vent of a storage battery

This invention relates to a multi-cell storage battery including a housing and, enclosing the housing in gas-tight fashion, a housing cover assembly having an upper cover panel and a lower cover panel with a degassing duct between the upper and lower cover panels which encompasses a multiple array of interconnected, mutually matched labyrinth chambers, fluidically links all cells, opens out at a forward end into at least one gas vent, and is closed off by a spark suppressor. To arrive at a storage battery in which adequate degassing is assured under all operating conditions while at the same time any leakage of acid accumulated in the degassing duct is largely prevented even when the internal pressure is high, the invention proposes a design whereby the gas vent is positioned at an essentially perpendicular angle relative to the direction of gas flow through the spark suppressor while in the area between the spark suppressor and the gas vent the degassing duct is provided with a widened section forming a collecting chamber which, when the storage battery is in its normal position, is situated underneath the gas vent.

A storage battery having a case closed-off by a block cover in which, for e purpose of separating-off acid, a hollow space is formed by means of a lower cover part and an upper cover part that is spaced from the lower cover part. In conformity with the number of cells, the hollow space is divided into interconnected chambers, each of which communicates at its deepest location with an associated cell via an opening which is in the form of a tubular member. In order to provide a storage battery having improved integrated acid separating-off capability in the block cover, the assembly of which can be undertaken either directly after production of the individual components or during assembly of the battery in the production line, with seal-testing of the connected parts being possible either individually or in combination with the block box of the battery, the tubular members each comprise two separate tubular pieces which are coaxially disposed, with one of the tubular pieces being provided on the lower cover part and extending away from the upper cover part and into the cell, and with the other of the tubular pieces being provided on the upper cover part and extending toward the lower cover part into the chamber. The tubular piece of the upper cover part has a greater diameter than does the tubular piece of the lower cover part, with the tubular piece of the upper cover part being spaced from the lower cover part in such a way that space is left between the tubular piece of the upper cover part and the tubular piece of the lower cover part for the passage of gas and acid.
