A continuously operating material press comprising temperature-controllable and drivable central drum 1 and a tensioned endless steel belt which passes around a major portion of the surface of the central drum and is supported by at least two guide drums and a tensioning drum. An increase in the pressure acting on a strip of material which is guided between the steel belt and the surface of the central drum is achieved by providing an additional pressing means which comprises a roller chain and an additional high-tensile steel belt supported by the chain. Both the roller chain and the additional steel belt are connected to a support structure for the central drum either directly or through the intermediary of tensioning devices.

Continuously operating material press

An apparatus for producing open-sided V-belts by cutting from a vulcanized, sleeve-shaped roll while the roll is being tensioned by being passed over two drivable rollers. By unilaterally pivoting one of the rollers and by providing a stop member which abuts the roll, the roll is tensioned by the desired amount and runs smoothly around the rollers so that an accurate cutting operation can be achieved by cutters.

Apparatus for producing open-sided V-belts

A method and an apparatus are provided for cutting open-flanked V-belts, for example, for use as fan belts in automobiles. Individual V-belts are cut from a vulcanized roll formed from a plurality of layers of rubber and reinforcements. The roll is rotatably disposed on support devices, the support devices being so arranged that at least a portion of the rotation of the roll occurs in straight lines. The belts are cut in the straight line regions. Extremely uniform flank cuts are achieved thereby. The straight line is defined between two rollers, over which the vulcanized roll is forced and becomes tensioned. Cutting devices are moved into and out of the straight line portion of the rotational path of the roll in order to produce the flank cuts.

Method and apparatus for cutting open-flanked or open-sided V-belts

Each screw shaft of a twin screw extruder with power branching gearing is driven by a gear train comprising a driven pinion, a first pair of intermediate gears meshing with the driven pinion from opposite sides, a second pair of intermediate gears each meshed with a respective one of the first pair of intermediate gears and a drive pinion meshed on its opposite sides with the second pair of intermediate gears and coupled to a power shaft. The first and second pairs of intermediate gears are capable only of rotation in a gear casing in which they are mounted but the drive pinion and the driven pinion are capable of radial movement in the casing. As shown the driven pinion has an axial extension with curved teeth engaged in one end of a coupling sleeve with internal curved teeth and a portion of the shaft has curved teeth engaged with the curved teeth in the other end of the sleeve, the shaft being mounted in bearings.

Apparatus for measuring the length of vee belts, particularly so that vee belts of closely similar length can be identified and thereby used together in multi-belt drives, comprises a fixed drivably rotatable pulley, a further pulley on a tensioning carriage, a belt to be measured being engaged on the pulleys, a drag chain to couple the carriage to a travel drive or to a tensioning station with tensioning weights, an absolute length measuring device to supply an electronic control and arithmetic unit and recording means to mark the vee belt with a symbol denoting a length tolerance part-range.

Multi-stage apparatus for plasticizing and extruding plastic material comprising a first extruder having a first screw, a planetary roller unit and a second extruder having a second screw, the second screw receiving its drive from the first screw via the planetary roller whereby a speed increase or reduction is obtainable between the two extruder screws depending upon the particular arrangement and tooth ratio of the planetary roller unit.

Apparatus for plasticizing and extruding plastic material

Drive means for two screw extruders combined in a cascade arrangement wherein, instead of providing a drive motor and reduction gear for each screw, both screws are driven from the same drive motor and reduction gearing and a coupling gearing is included between the reduction gearing and one of the screws to enable different speed ratios of the two screws to be obtained. The coupling gearing may be shift gearing including pair of gears of different ratios alternatively and selectively included in the drive train to one of the screws by means of respective clutches. In another embodiment the coupling gearing includes a planet gearing with a ring gear of the planet gearing drivable by an electric motor to vary the speed of an output gear coupled to planet wheels compared to the speed of an input sun gear driven from the reduction gearing. A further embodiment has the planet gears connected to an output shaft, a ring gear connecting the planet gearing to the reduction gear and the sun gear connected to control gearing powered from the reduction gearing and controllable to vary the speed of the output shaft.

Drive means for a cascade extruder

Extrusion apparatus for manufacturing blow moulded sheets of expanded polystyrene wherein, following an extruder there is a static cooler/mixer member comprising inner and outer cooling surfaces defining between them an annular passage, the inner cooling surface having a star-shaped outline when viewed in cross-section with the points of the star extending at an oblique angle to the longitudinal axis. Preferably the star-shaped outline is provided by folded metal strips several of which are provided alternately angled and staggered with respect to one another.

Extrusion apparatus for manufacturing foamed thermoplastic material

A power branching transmission, having two parallel output shafts, each of which carries a rotationally rigidly connected ouptput drive pinion, the output drive pinions being axially offset with respect to one another and each meshing with a respective rotatable ring gear and with a respective central gear wheel disposed in the respective ring gear, a pair of driving pinions rotationally rigidly disposed on parallel drive shafts and each meshing with a respective one of the ring gears and a respective one of the central gear wheels, each of the ring gears and each of the central gear wheels having at least one coaxial race with at least one supporting roller disposed between the races and bracing the respective ring gear and associated central wheel with respect to one another. No housing is required, tooth forces of the ring gears and central gears being accommodated by the supporting rollers and not transmitted to the radial bearings of the input end output shafts.

Power branching transmission

Extruder and twin roller calendering plant for producing films or sheets of synthetic plastics or rubber material comprising a pair of calendering rollers mounted in a calender frame and an extruder nozzle head directed into the gap between the pair of calendering rollers, the calender frame being pivotally mounted such that it can be pivoted away from the extruder nozzle head to allow ready access to the extruder nozzle head. The calender frame may be pivotally mounted on the nozzle head and a counter balance weight and/or the drive motor for rollers can be mounted on an opposite side of the pivot to the rollers thereby to counter balance the weight of the rollers.

Extruder and twin roller calendering plant

A twin screw extruder comprising a cylinder having twin bores therein to receive the twin screw of the extruder and a circular casing with at least one passage to permit heating or cooling fluid to flow between the cylinder and the casing, in which the cylinder has a generally circular outside contour with a first set of grooves and a second set of grooves forming parts of said at least one passage, extending obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder and formed in the outer surface of the cylinder, the bottom walls of the grooves extending parallel to a plane which includes the two longitudinal axes of the twin bores with the first set of grooves lying on one side of said plane, and the second set of grooves lying on the other side of said plane, the inclination of said first set of grooves to said axis being opposite to the inclination of said second set of grooves to said axis, and the inside of the casing containing spaced recesses forming further parts of said at least one passage and, except for end ones of said recesses, each connecting one end of a respective one of the grooves of the first set of grooves to one end of a respective one of the grooves of the second set of grooves.

Twin screw extruders

A screw extruder for thermoplastics synthetic materials or elastomers having a screw rotating in a cylinder wherein the screw has a mixing part having a plurality of first grooves at an upstream position thereof inclined in the direction of feed, a plurality of second grooves at a position downstream of the first grooves and also inclined in the direction of feed and a grooveless portion between said first grooves and said second grooves, and the cylinder has a mixing part which surrounds said grooveless portion of the mixing part of the screw and has third grooves therein which extend axially or are inclined in the direction of feed, the number of said first grooves, said third grooves and said second grooves differing. Preferably the number of grooves diminishes in the feed direction that is to say the number of said first grooves exceeds the number of said third grooves and the number of said third grooves exceeds the number of said second grooves. The transitions of said third grooves to the cylinder bore are preferably gradual transitions.

Screw extruder for thermoplastics synthetic materials or elastomers

Continuously operable apparatus for the preparation and/or processing of synthetic plastics or rubber moulding compounds, comprising a housing in the form of a channel and a mixing and kneading member engaged in the channel and having a surface which co-operates with the bottom wall of the channel, in which said bottom wall and said surface of the mixing and kneading member are undulatingly profiled in a manner such that the profiles extend transversely or obliquely with respect to the longitudinal axis of said channel and said member, and drive means, including at least one crank drive, coupled between the housing and said member to cause said member and said housing, while retaining their respective orientations to move relatively to one another to cause the peaks of the undulations on one of said surface and said bottom wall to perform a circular movement in associated valleys in the other of said surface and said bottom wall. Two synchronously movable crank drives may be provided with adjustment means for adjusting the spacing between the mixing and kneading member and the housing.
