In the process for the continuous dispersion of at least one fluid A constituting the disperse phase and at least one continuous phase constituting the enclosing phase of a fluid B, at least one fluid stream A and at least one fluid stream B are fed into a dispersion apparatus and come into contact therein in a dispersion chamber. To this end, a microstructure dispersion apparatus (,) is used in which the fluid streams A, B are broken up into spatially separate, flowing fluid filaments by a system of microchannels (,) associated therewith, which filaments are discharged into the dispersion chamber (,) at identical flow velocities for the particular fluid in such a manner that on discharge into the dispersion chamber (,) a fluid jet (,) of the disperse phase is in each case immediately adjacent to a fluid jet (,) of the continuous phase and in each case a fluid jet (,) of the disperse phase is enclosed as it is broken up into particles in the adjacent fluid jets (,) of the continuous phase.

Method of producing dispersions and carrying out of chemical reactions in the disperse phase

A method and a device for producing a dispersed mixture from at least two phases. To do this, the first and the second phase are subdivided into split streams so that the split streams from the first phase are located on a first flat layer and the split streams from the second phase are located on a second flat layer, the split streams of the first phase inside the flat layer being fed onto the split streams of the second phase at an angle in order to bring about a dispersion and mixing process, wherein the flat layers are directly arranged on top of each other, and parallel to each other. The device consists of at least one base unit containing two foils into which a parallel assembly of grooves is inserted on one side of each foil. Both foils are configured in the base unit such that the sides of the foils fitted with grooves lie on top of each other and form an angle with each other.

Method and device for producing a dispersed mixture via crossing partial flows

In the reaction process, at least two educts A, B are divided by a system, assigned to each of them, of slit-like microchannels,into spatially separate fluid lamellae, which then emerge into a common mixing and reaction space,. The fluid lamellae here have a thickness <1,000 &mgr;m, preferably <100 &mgr;m, at a width thickness ratio of at least 10. It is essential here that educts A, B can emerge as thin fluid lamellae,into the mixing/reaction space,, each fluid lamella,of an educt A being led into the mixing/reaction space,in the immediate vicinity of a fluid lamella,of another educt B. The adjacent fluid lamellae,then subsequently mix by diffusion and/or turbulence. As a result, the mixing operation is accelerated substantially compared with conventional reactors. In the case of rapid chemical reactions, the formation of undesirable by-products or secondary products is largely prevented in this manner.

Process for carrying out chemical reactions using a microlaminar mixer

A microstructures lamellae mixer comprising a guide component for supplying fluids to be mixed to a mixing chamber, the guide component being composed of a plurality of foils which are layered one above the other and into which microchannels are incorporated such that separate fluids supplied to the guide component are formed into spatially separated microstreams which then emerge adjacent to each other in a mixing chamber.

Device for carrying out chemical reactions using a microlaminar mixer

In a static micromixer a flow guide structure consisting of a stack of foils provided with passages formed into alternate foils so as to extend between a mixing chamber at one end of the flow guide structure and different admission chambers at the opposite end of the flow guide structure, the passages are curved so that they are all parallel at their exit ends adjacent the mixing chamber and, at their entrance ends, the flow guide structure has face areas which are inclined with respect to the exit end face of the flow guide structure at such an angle that the curved passages have all about the same length.

Static micromixer

In a static micromixer for mixing at least two fluids including a flow guide structure having a longitudinal axis extending in the general flow direction of the fluids through the guide structure, separate fluid admission areas disposed at the entrance end of the flow guide structure and a mixing chamber disposed at the exit end of the flow guide structure, the flow guide structure is formed by foils of a thickness of about 100 .mu.m disposed on top of each other and having parallel grooves extending in one foil from one of the fluid admission areas at an angle with respect to the general fluid flow direction through the flow guide structure to the mixing chamber and in an adjacent foil from another of the fluid admission areas to the mixing chamber such that in the mixing chamber the fluid exits of different foils are disposed adjacent each other, the grooves having a width of less than 250 .mu.m and being spaced from each other by less than 70 .mu.m to provide for the fluid flow filaments entering the mixing chamber at different angles and closely adjacent each other.

Static micromixer with heat exchanger

In an apparatus for culturing cells which comprises a plate-like body with a lattice structure having openings separated from one another by sidewalls and a bottom disposed on one side of the lattice structure and having passages permeable for liquids but not for cells so as to form, with the lattice structure, cavities for receiving cells to be grown therein, the cavities have a clear width of between 50 .mu.m and 1000 .mu.m and the bottom consists of a material to which cells placed into the cavities will not easily attach so that the cells grow from the side walls of the cavities causing them to form a three-dimensional cell structure.

Substrate for cell structures

A method of manufacturing a plastic article having micro-openings defined therein by working a semi-finished plastic structure having microrecesses defined on one side thereof, the method including, in the order recited, providing a semi-finished plastic structure having opposing first and second sides, wherein the first side of the opposing sides has microrecesses defined therein; filling the semi-finished plastic structure to cover the microrecesses with a substance which is hardenable and selectively removable; hardening the substance; machining the surface of the hardened substance to smooth it; clamping the semi-finished plastic structure onto a vacuum tensioning device with the smoothed surface of the hardened substance in contact with the vacuum tensioning device; machining the second side of the opposing sides of the semi-finished plastic structure until the microrecesses of the first side are at least partially exposed thereby defining micro-openings in the structure; and removing the hardened substance selectively from the microrecesses.

Method of manufacturing a plastic article having micro-openings defined

A method of producing a finely structured body which includes a plurality of stacked, cut sections of foil at least one of which is provided with grooves in a selected groove direction on at least one surface thereof, and which has a plurality of closely juxtaposed, channel-like perforations with high shape accuracy, true dimensions and high surface quality. The method includes: a. providing a vacuum clamping means comprised of a ground, sintered metal plate which is connected to a vacuum source and which is positioned on a work table which is movable in two mutually perpendicular directions X and Y; b. positioning a machinable foil on the ground, sintered metal plate and clamping the machinable foil thereto by applying an effective amount of vacuum; c. cutting a plurality of parallel grooves into the surface of the machinable foil by means of at least one shaping diamond positioned on a cutting spindle and adjustable in a direction Z, each groove of the plurality of grooves having a groove length, a groove width, and a cross-sectional shape that is constant over the groove length and freely selectable; d. cutting the grooved machinable foil into cut sections having selected lengths and widths; and e. stacking the cut sections, wherein the plurality of grooves have a form precision such that, for groove lengths of more than 1000 .mu.m, the groove width has an accuracy of about +1 .mu.m for land widths which equal or exceed about 15 .mu.m.

Process for manufacturing finely structured bodies such as heat

A method of producing a finely structured body comprised of a plurality of stacked, cut sections of foil at least one of which is provided with grooves. A machinable foil is wrapped around a cylindrical mandrel of a lathe to overlap opposing edges. The overlapped edges are clamped into an axial recess of the cylindrical mandrel by means of a clamping means and a plurality of grooves cut into the surface of the foil by means of at least one shaping diamond positioned in a feed which is finely adjustable. The plurality of grooves each have a groove length, a groove width, and a cross-sectional shape that is constant over the groove length and is freely selectable. Then, the grooved machinable foil is cut into cut sectoins and the cut sections are stacked. The plurality of grooves have a form precision such that, for groove lengths of more than 1000 .mu.m, the groove width has an accuracy of about .+-.1 .mu.m for land widths which equal or exceed about 15 .mu.m. Alternately, the machinable foil may be stretched over a vacuum clamping means comprised of a ground, sintered metal plate positioned on a work table which is movable in two mutually perpendicular directions X and Y and a plurality of grooves cut into the surface of the machinable foil by means of at least one shaping diamond positioned on a cutting spindle and adjustable in a direction Z.

Process for manufacturing fine-structured bodies

The invention relates to a process for producing a two-dimensionally extending metallic microstructure body having a multitude of minute openings the dimensions and distribution of which may be predetermined. A tool having microstructures on the surface thereof, which microstructures taper outwardly, is pressed into the electrically insulating layer of a molding material comprising an electrically insulating layer and an electrically conducting layer, so that the microstructures project at least through the insulating layer, to form an impression in the molding material. The tool is withdrawn from the molding material to form an impression in the molding material comprised of openings which taper in the direction of the electrically conducting layer. The impression of the molding material is electroplated with a metal to fill the openings with metal to form a two-dimensionally extending metallic microstructure having adjacent metal fillings and minute openings, by filling the openings in the impression to a height at which the distance between adjacent fillings corresponds at the surface of the fillings to the predetermined dimensions of the two-dimensionally extending metallic microstructure. The molding material is removed from the two-dimensionally extending metallic microstructure.

A method for preventing fluoroelastomer-related hydrolysis of a gas stream comprised of a fluorine-containing substance and contained in an industrial system provided with at least one fluoroelastomeric article, including the step of including in portions of the industrial system which contact the gas stream only fluoroelastomeric articles comprised of a fluoroelastomer and lead oxide, the lead oxide content corresponding to a lead percentage in the fluoroelastomer ranging from 1 to 10 percent by weight preferably from 1 to 5 percent by weight, optionally 3 percent by weight. The fluoroelastomeric article may be a seal for the industrial gas stream-handling system. Further, the fluorine-containing substance may be selected from the group consisting of UF.sub.6, HF, BF.sub.3, SiF.sub.4, MoF.sub.6, WF.sub.6, halogen fluorides, and mixtures thereof.

Method for producing a separating nozzle element including a separating body and terminal plates, for the separation of a gaseous or vaporous mixture, wherein the separating body comprises separating structures which penetrate the separating body and define separating chambers and gas conduits, and the terminal plates are provided with channels for the intake and discharge of gas streams. A mold layer is produced which contains negative outlines of the separating structures. Thereafter, the negative outlines of the mold layer are filled with a structure material which is compatible with the gaseous or vaporous mixture to be separated to form the separating structures. The mold layer containing the negative outlines of the separating structure is produced by shaping the mold layer from a reusable tool provided with the positive outlines of the separating structures.

Method for producing separating nozzle elements

A method for producing a component of a separation element for separating a aseous or vaporous mixture into fractions, which element is composed of a plurality of separating nozzle structures presenting passages defining mixture supply channels, separating chambers and fraction discharge channels, which method includes: forming a negative mold of the component by: providing a plate of a selected material whose ability to be removed from the plate is influenced by application of selected radiation; irradiating portions of the plate with such radiation in a pattern corresponding to the passages presented by the nozzle structure and to an extent such that material outside of the regions delimiting the passages is removable more easily than material within those regions; and removing the more easily removable material from the plate to create the negative mold of the component and forming the component by: filling the openings in the negative mold with a second material to create a solid plate-shaped member; and removing the negative mold from the plate-shaped member.

Method for producing separating nozzle elements used for separating

A separating nozzle element composed of a separating body and end plates enclosing the body, for separating components of gaseous or vaporous mixtures, the separating body being provided with separating structures which delimit separating chambers and gas conduits and the end plates being provided with channels for supplying gas to, and removing gas streams from, the separating chambers and conduits, in which the separating body is produced in successive contiguous layers by carrying out the following sequence of steps a plurality of times until a given separating body thickness is achieved: providing a mold layer; irradiating selected portions of the layer with radiation in a spatial pattern corresponding to the separating structures to render only selected regions of the layer which correspond to the separating structures removable in a predetermined manner; removing the selected regions; and filling the spaces thus created in the layer with a material which is compatible with the gaseous or vaporous mixture whose components are to be separated, in order to form a laminar portion of the separating structures, and after the desired thickness is achieved, removing the remaining material of the mold layers.
