In a method of operating a screw extruder having a drive motor in which the speed of rotation of the drive motor is controlled, in order to achieve as constant a quality of product as possible, the speed of rotation is controlled depending on the specific energy input in such a manner that the specific energy input is maintained substantially constant. A control depending on the product temperature may advantageously be superimposed on the control keeping the specific energy constant in the form of a cascade control. A screw extruder for carrying out the method has a housing in which a screw is mounted, a drive motor having a variable speed for continuously driving the screw, feed devices for supplying basic products, additives and the like, and a control device for controlling the speed of rotation of the screw. The drive motor is controlled by a device for measuring the driving power of the drive motor and a device for determining the product throughput, a signal corresponding to the quotient of driving power and throughput being fed as an actual value to the control device which has an output connected to the drive motor in order to maintain the specific energy input constant.

Repetitive processes in internal combustion engines which are dependent upon the values of particular parameters are controlled either by a main computer or an auxiliary computer. Switching from the main to the auxiliary computer takes place if a sequence error detecting stage detects errors in the desired alternation between the main control signals furnished by the main computer and reference mark signals indicative of predetermined angular positions of a shaft of the engine. Specifically, the system is switched to operate under control of the auxiliary computer if such an alternation error occurs again within a predetermined number of cycles. The switching can also take place as a result of missing reference mark signals and as a result of the absence of monitoring signals indicative of correct operation of the main computer program.

An electronic control system for internal combustion engines which has signal generator circuits for the fuel metering and for the ignition. During starting, especially in the case of cold starting, three different phases are provided for controlling the injected fuel quantity and for regulating the fuel quantity downward; furthermore, the ignition angle is adjusted in accordance with temperature and rpm. In terms of the fuel metering, the boundary between the first and second phase is dependent on the rpm or on a maximum total number of revolution cycles, and the end of the second phase is predetermined by a minimum metering signal which is dependent on temperature. In the ignition system, there is an increasing adjustment toward 'early' approximately in the rpm range between 200 and 600 revolutions per minute as well as an increasing adjustment toward 'late' as the temperature increases.
