A tool for machining is made from a hard-metal, cermet or ceramic base material and a single-layer or multi-layer hard material coating on the base material. An additional coating of one or more metals from the group of aluminum, copper, zinc, titanium, nickel, tin or base alloys of these metals is applied to the hard material coating.

Tool for machining

The wearing part, such as a cutting insert, is made from hard metal or cermet. A hard-material coating is applied on the base material. The coating includes a single-layer or multilayer mixed-oxide coat, predominantly comprising Al O , in which defined proportions of titanium oxide and boron oxide are dissolved or homogeneously distributed extremely finely. The wearing part is distinguished by a high wear resistance, which improves the service life, and a fine-grained structure and uniformity of the coat and by a highly economic application of the coat.

Hard metal wearing part with mixed oxide coating

An improved process for improving the adhesion between a cemented carbide substrate and a diamond layer deposited thereon by removing the binder phase of the cemented material from the surface of the substrate prior to diamond coating. For this purpose, the process of the invention uses an apparatus as is conventionally used in various technologies for the CVD process of diamond layers. The process parameters are here altered from those of the conventional diamond coating in such a way that binder metal is evaporated from a very narrow boundary zone of the substrate surface, utilizing the reaction heat from the recombination of previously dissociated hydrogen gas directly at the substrate surface.

The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of multi-layered wear-resistant CVD- or PVD-coatings applied to hardmetal parts containing WC-Co or WC-Ni, where at least one of the layers is a metal-boronitride layer. According to the invention, the boron concentration in the metal-boronitride layer is maintained below the critical level above which in addition a homogeneous boronitride mixed crystal phase a further phase, particularly a diboride phase is formed. A non-boronic, or only slightly boronic, intermediate layer is employed as a diffusion barrier between the hardmetal and the metal-boronitride layer to limit or prevent the formation of brittle tungsten cobalt boron or tungsten nickel boron phases on the external surface of the hardmetal. The metallic boronitride layer can be applied either as a single layer or in multiple layers alternating with other mechanically resistant layers. The hardmetal part is particularly a cutting insert for machining.

Process for the manufacture of multi-layered, coated hardmetal parts

There is disclosed a wearing part comprising a basic body, a coating applied directly to the basic body or to a backing provided on the basic body and which coating consists of one or a plurality of layers of oxycarbides and/or oxynitrides and/or oxyborides and/or oxyboron nitrides and/or oxyboron carbon nitrides of the elements Ti, Zr, Hf, B, Si and Al and having an oxygen content in a range of from about 0.1 to about 5% by weight, alternating in each case with one or a plurality of layers of aluminum-boron mixed oxides having a boron content in a range of from about 0.01 to about 1% by weight. Compared to previously known wearing parts provided with multi-layer coatings a wearing part in accordance with the present invention exhibits significantly increased resistance to wear, as well as excellent adhesive strength, with respect to the hard-material coating, thus resulting in a substantially prolonged useful life.

Cemented carbide elements with working faces bearing a thin multilayer or stratified coating of nonuniform composition of wear-resistant materials exhibit superior wear-resistance for improved performance and service life under severe service conditions as in the case of inserts for cutting tools and wire drawing dies. In one embodiment, an initial carbon-rich layer of titanium carbide or carbonitride coating material in direct contact with a cemented carbide part or insert underlies a middle or intermediate stratified transition zone made up of a series of parallel layers or strata of coating material wherein the content of carbon and nitrogen is not constant but varies with the stratum or location by depth in that zone with the material gradually changing to titanium compounds that are progressively lower in combined carbon content and richer in nitrogen than in the initial layer until the composition of the outermost stratum of the transition zone approximates that of the overlying surface layer of high nitrogen content (e.g., titanium nitride). The coating is formed by a gas deposition method wherein changes in the concentration of gaseous carbon and nitrogen compounds are used to control the formation of the various layers of different composition in the layered coating.
