Sheets of cardboard continuously fed in a shingled stream are stacked upon a progressively lowered speed form until the desired stack height is reached, whereupon a vertically-fixed horizontal movable bar grate is inserted between the oncoming sheets and the finished stack, concurrently with vibration of the stop board against which the leading edges of the sheets impact.

Method of and apparatus for the stacking of sheets

In the cutting of a continuous web such as paper or cardboard into sheets employing a cross-cutting apparatus comprising conveyor rolls, a pair of parallel cross-knives and a sheet outfeeder, the improvement in the start-up or restarting of the apparatus which comprises moving the cross-knives to a position not interfering with the free passage of the web, starting the apparatus up by setting the conveyor rolls in rotation, and bringing the cross-knives into the cutting position only after the leading end of the web has been introduced in full web width into the sheet outfeeder.

Method for the operation of a cross-cutting apparatus

In an apparatus for scanning the markings on foils on the necks of the bottles in a bottle labeling machine having a photoelectric scanner including a light source and a lens for illuminating the foil on the bottle neck, a one-way mirror in the path of the light, a photosensitive receiver and a first amplifier connected thereto, the improvement wherein the photosensitive receiver comprises a pair of photoelectric elements respectively provided on the upper and lower edges of the lens, and an integrating amplifier operatively connected to each output of the pair of photoelectric receivers. The photoelectric elements are preferably photocells located either within or outside the lens in a line parallel to the bottle axis and diametrically to the lens. A selector switch may be provided to switch from the integrated output-scanning to auto-collimation.

A safety system for the drive of a cross cutter for a web of material, having an electrical or mechanical synchronizing system between the drives of the feed and cutting mechanism which is adjustable for the size of the piece to be cut and which consists of an adjustable asymmetrical mechanism and has speed control associated with the drive of the feed mechanism to limit the speed of the feed means on the basis of a signal corresponding to the setting of the asymmetrical mechanism. A function generator generates a signal to be applied to the speed control which is directly dependent thereon to define the speed value for the drive of the feed mechanism and wherein the function generator is responsive to the asymmetrical mechanism for size-related, maximum permissible web velocity.

Safety system for the drive of a synchronous cross cutter

A winding station for webs comprises a plurality of knives disposed side by side and which are laterally displaceable along the width of a web to predetermined positions for slitting the web into a plurality of narrower webs. A guide roller is disposed downstream of the knife and a plurality of pairs of winding frames are disposed in at least two rows in a staggered relationship on opposite sides of the guide roller. The winding frames are laterally displaceable into positions corresponding to the positions of the knives by means of servomotors. The winding frames bear projecting chucks for receiving winding spools thereon and gripper cones over the winding chucks which are expandable radially by axial displacement. A program control effects the positioning of the winding frames to align the gripper cones with the knives. A program control utilizes the information of the sensing of the lateral position of the knives for first effecting the displacement of at least one winding frame of each pair to correct the position corresponding to the associated knives and thereafter effecting the displacement of the other winding frame of each pair against the one winding frame until the winding spool that is to be mounted is gripped by the axially moving and simultaneously expanding gripper cones. As a result of this movement, the lateral position of the gripper cones for some pairs of the winding frames are shifted off center.
