A process is disclosed for thinning granular starch in an aqueous slurry employing a source of peracid without using metal catalysts. The thinning process is aimed at modifying granular starches by lowering viscosity/increasing alkaline fluidity. It can also be employed immediately before or during cooking (gelatinization) of starch. Sources of peracids are peroxomonosulfuric acid (Caro's acid) or organic peracids such as performic, peracetic or perpropionic acid. Reaction time and temperature are lower than for existing process while product properties are improved.

Thinning of granular starch

A method is disclosed for detoxifying an aqueous waste solution containing cyanide. The method involves adding a source of silicon oxide to the cyanide containing aqueous waste solution in a concentration of 0.001 to 10 g silicon dioxide/liter aqueous waste solution, at an alkaline pH and a temperature of from 10.degree. to 100.degree. C. Hydrogen peroxide or another peroxygen compound is added in a sufficient quantity to convert the aqueous waste solution containing cyanide to an aqueous solution containing environmentally less toxic materials.

Destruction of cyanide and other pollutants in aqueous solutions

A process is described in which, by the addition of formamidinesulfinic acid in association with an ozone or ozone/oxygen treatment, the viscosity and strength of wood pulps are stabilized at the level that is obtained with use of conventional, chlorine-containing bleaching processes.
