The invention relates to the supply of lamps ('&#x2033;) of at least two different lamp types, of which a first lamp type (&#x2032;&#x2033;) has a wattage which is approximately a whole multiple of the wattage of a second lamp type (&#x2033;), whereby the same ballast devices () are used, embodied for the direct supply of the second lamp type (&#x2033;) and which may be operated in parallel for the supply of the first lamp type (&#x2032;&#x2033;). The correct connection of a suitable lamp (&#x2032;&#x2033;) to the ballast device () is monitored by means of a signal exchange between ballast device () and lamps (&#x2032;&#x2033;) before switching on the supply line of the ballast device ().

Electronic ballasts which can be connected in parallel on the basis of the type of lamp

The invention relates to ballast for a discharge lamp (), comprising a direct-current supply phase (), semiconductor switches (), operated at a high-frequency clock frequency for modifying the direction of current through the discharge lamp (), an ignition transformer (), which can be supplied with the direct current of the direct-current supply phase () via a series capacitor () and a choke inductance () that is connected to an electrode of the discharge of the discharge lamp (), said electrode not being connected to the ignition transformer (). To increase the ignition reliability of the discharge lamp (), a capacitor (), connected in series to a switch (), is connected between a junction point () of the series capacitor () and ignition transformer () on one side and a junction point () between the discharge lamp () and the choke inductance () on the other side, and the capacitor () and the choke inductance () form a series resonant circuit that is tuned to a higher harmonic of the clock frequency.
