A direct mate orthogonal electrical connector assembly includes first and second electrical connectors configured to be mated to respective first and second substrates such that the second substrate is perpendicular to the first substrate.

Electrical connectors and contacts for transmitting power are provided. One power contact embodiment includes a first plate that defines a first non-deflecting beam and a first deflectable beam, and a second plate that defines a second non-deflecting beam and a second deflectable beam. The first and second plates are positioned beside one another to form the power contact.

Preferred embodiments of power contacts have alignment features that can maintain conductors of the power contacts in a state of alignment during and after insertion of the power contacts into a housing.

A power contact as disclosed herein may include first and second conductive plates positioned parallel to each other. Each of the conductive plates may include respective first and second curved portions. The first curved portion of the first conductive plate and the second curved portion of the second conductive plate diverge in two opposite directions. Board tails extend in a common first direction from a first edge of the first conductive plate and a corresponding first edge of the second conductive plate. A contact extends from the first conductive plate and the second conductive plate in a third direction that is generally perpendicular to the common first direction and generally perpendicular to the two opposite directions.

Electrical connectors can include thermally conductive material in regions proximate contacts residing therein to sink heat away from the contacts. The thermally-conductive materials can be provided in the housing structure of the connectors. The thermally-conductive material can also be provided as a thermally-conductive member distinct from the housing.

Preferred embodiments of power contacts include two or more opposing contact beams of a first type that are spaced apart along at least a portion of the length thereof when the power contact is in an unmated state; and two or more opposing contact beams of a second type. The contact beams of the second type are spaced apart so that the contact beams of the second type pinch the contact beams of the first type when the power contact is mated with a mating contact, thereby causing the contact beams of the first type of deflect inwardly toward each other.

A preferred embodiment of an electrical connector includes an electrical conductor for transmitting electrical power, and a housing. The electrical conductor is mounted in the housing so that the housing and the electrical conductor define a channel for circulating airflow through the housing and along a surface of the electrical conductor.
