This description relates to low VOC water borne coating compositions with improved application properties based on a binder mixture comprising an urethanized polyester and an acrylic two-step polymer. This description further relates to the use of the low VOC water borne coating compositions for forming a coating, preferably for forming a clear coat, and more preferably for forming a clear coat in refinishing applications. Moreover, this description also relates to a method of forming a multilayer coating comprising a step of forming a coating layer by using the low VOC water borne coating composition.

Low VOC water borne coating compositions with improved application properties

Two-component coating compositions include: A) a cross-linkable binder compound having at least one functional group reactive towards isocyanate groups, B) a cross-linking agent having at least one free isocyanate group and C) a catalyst component comprising C1) a catalyst for the for the curing reaction between the functional groups of component A) and the isocyanate groups of component B), the catalyst C1) being an organo-metal compound, and C2) an oligomeric or polymeric binder compound having a glass transition temperature Tg of &#x2267;about 20&#xb0; C., measured by DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) at a heating rate of 10 K/min. The glass transition temperature Tg of the binder compound C2) is above the temperature at which the two-component coating composition is applied, preferably about 10&#xb0; C. above the temperature at which the two-component coating composition is applied.

Catalyst compounds for water-based two-component coating compositions include: I) an organo-metal catalyst for a curing reaction between isocyanate groups and functional groups reactive towards isocyanate groups and II) an oligomeric or polymeric binder compound having a glass transition temperature Tg of &#x2267;20&#xb0; C., measured by DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) at a heating rate of 10 K/min. The glass transition temperature Tg of binder compound II) is above the temperature at which a water-based two-component coating composition comprising the catalyst compound is applied, preferably is at least 10&#xb0; C., more preferred at least 20&#xb0; C., above the temperature at which the two-component coating composition is applied.
