An image processing apparatus comprises a receiver () for receiving an image signal which comprises at least an encoded image and a target display reference. The target display reference is indicative of a dynamic range of a target display for which the encoded image is encoded. A dynamic range processor () generates an output image by applying a dynamic range transform to the encoded image in response to the target display reference. An output () then outputs an output image signal comprising the output image, e.g. to a suitable display. The dynamic range transform may furthermore be performed in response to a display dynamic range indication received from a display. The invention may be used to generate an improved High Dynamic Range (HDR) image from e.g. a Low Dynamic Range (LDR) image, or vice versa.

Apparatus and method for dynamic range transforming of images

An apparatus generates an image signal in which pixels are encoded in N-bit words which encode at least a luma per pixel. A receiver () obtains high dynamic range pixel values in accordance with a first color representation in M-bitwords. A first generator () includes the high dynamic range pixel values in the image signal in the N-bit words according to a second color representation. A second generator () includes in the image signal an indicator that high dynamic range pixel values are encoded. In some examples, the high dynamic range pixel values may be provided in a segment that can alternatively contain high or low dynamic range pixel values, and the indicator may indicate which type of data is included. The approach may e.g. facilitate introduction of high dynamic range capability into e.g. HDMI systems.

High dynamic range image signal generation and processing

A three dimensional (3D) video signal is processed in a video device. The device has generating means for generating an output signal for transferring the video data via a high-speed digital interface like HDMI to a 3D display, which selectively generate a 3D display signal for displaying the 3D video data on a 3D display operative in a 3D mode, a 2D display signal for displaying 2D video data on the 3D display operative in a 2D mode, or a pseudo 2D display signal by including 2D video data in the output signal for displaying the 2D video data on the 3D display operative in the 3D mode. Processing means detects a request to display 2D video data on the 3D display, while the 3D display is operative in the 3D mode, and, in response to the detection, the generating means are set to generate the pseudo 2D display signal for maintaining the 3D mode of the 3D display.

Switching between 3D video and 2D video

Three dimensional [3D] image data and auxiliary graphical data are combined for rendering on a 3D display () by detecting depth values occurring in the 3D image data, and setting auxiliary depth values for the auxiliary graphical data () adaptively in dependence of the detected depth values. The 3D image data and the auxiliary graphical data at the auxiliary depth value are combined based on the depth values of the 3D image data. First an area of attention () in the 3D image data is detected. A depth pattern for the area of attention is determined, and the auxiliary depth values are set in dependence of the depth pattern.

Method and apparatus for combining 3D image and graphical data

A three dimensional [3D] video signal is processed in a video device (). The device has generating means () for generating an output signal for transferring the video data via a high-speed digital interface like HDMI to a 3D display, which selectively generate a 3D display signal for displaying the 3D video data on a 3D display operative in a 3D mode, a 2D display signal for displaying 2D video data on the 3D display operative in a 2D mode, or a pseudo 2D display signal by including 2D video data in the output signal for displaying the 2D video data on the 3D display operative in the 3D mode. Processing means () detect a request to display 2D video data on the 3D display, while the 3D display is operative in the 3D mode, and, in response to the detection, the generating means are set to generate the pseudo 2D display signal for maintaining the 3D mode of the 3D display.

An apparatus for generating an image comprises a receiver () which receives 3D image data providing an incomplete representation of a scene. A receiver () receives a target view vector indicative of a target viewpoint in the scene for the image and a reference source () provides a reference view vector indicative of a reference viewpoint for the scene. A modifier () generates a rendering view vector indicative of a rendering viewpoint as a function of the target viewpoint and the reference viewpoint for the scene. An image generator () generates the image in response to the rendering view vector and the 3D image data.

Apparatus and method for generating an image

An apparatus for generating an image comprises a receiver () which receives 3D image data providing an incomplete representation of a scene. A view vector source () provides a rendering view vector indicative of a rendering viewpoint for the image. A renderer () renders a first region of an intermediate image for the rendering view vector based on image data from the 3D image data. An extrapolator () extrapolates the 3D image data into a second adjoining region of the intermediate image with the 3D image not comprising image data for the second region. A blur processor () generates the image in response to applying a spatially varying blurring to the intermediate image where a degree of blurring is higher in a transitional region between the first region and the second region than in an internal area of the first region.

To allow pragmatic insertion of secondary images by an apparatus connected to the final display we invented an image processing apparatus () with an output image connection () for connection to a display (), and an input () for receiving an input image (IM) and metadata specifying at least one luminance mapping function (F_Lt), which luminance mapping function specifies the relationship between luminances in the input image and a second image with an at least 6 times higher or lower maximum luminance, and comprising a graphics generation unit () arranged to determine a secondary image (IMG), and an image composition unit () arranged to compose an output image (IMC) on the basis of the pixel colors of the input image and of the secondary image, characterized in that the image processing apparatus comprises a luminance function selection unit (), which is arranged to output to a metadata output () a copy of the at least one luminance mapping function (F_Lt) in case no secondary image colors arc mixed with the input image, and which is arranged to output a predetermined mapping function (F) in case the output image is not identical to the input image because some pixel colors of the secondary image have been used to change the input image colors.

Graphics-safe HDR image luminance re-grading

In a video processing system, such as e.g. a set top box or a BD player wherein in a merger video can be merged with one or more overlays a video/overlay pixel indication (A) is encoded in one or more of the least significant bits of one or more of the color components in the video signal. The video signal is transmitted over the interface between VPS and display. The display subject the image to an adaptation. This adaptation is performed dependent on the video/overlay pixel indication (A).

Method for encoding, video processor, method for decoding, video decoder

A video distribution system transfers a formatted video signal () having elementary streams representing audiovisual content to be rendered in a selected combination and stream information indicative of selectable elementary streams. The formatted video signal represents extended video having an extended range (HDR) of brightness and/or color. A video device () processes input video to provide video processing metadata representing a conversion between standard video and the extended video. The formatted video signal comprises a primary video elementary stream representing standard or extended video, a video processing elementary stream not comprising audiovisual content but comprising video processing metadata representing a conversion between standard and extended video or vice versa, and extended stream information comprising an entry indicative of the video processing elementary stream. Advantageously a video player (), for example a BD player, is enabled to render both extended and standard video based on the extended stream information and the video processing elementary stream.
