A method for dispersing solid forms of additives in polymers involves adding dispersions or solutions of additive(s) to a solution of polymer in a tubular mixer (preferably in the presence of a stationary mixer). The mixer leads to a steam precipitation step wherein all fluid ingredients in the mixture are volatilized leaving the solid additive and resin in the desired ratio. This results in a uniform dispersion of the additives in the polymer matrix. As a result of the high dispersion, physical properties of a thermoplastic resin, to which the polymer matrix has been added are preserved. In one illustration, PTFE as a drip inhibitor additive, is added to polycarbonate to obtain a highly dispersed PTFE concentrate of improved-drip-inhibition without loss of mechanical properties when added to a thermoplastic molding resin.

A polyestercarbonate copolymer blend which exhibits a glass transition temperature lower than bisphenol-A carbonate homopolymer, shows improved processability and fire-retardancy. The desired lower Tg and improved flow can be achieved by the polycondensation of a dihydric phenol and aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. The condensate is polymerized with a carbonate forming reagent. The resin is fire-retarded with a mixture of halogenated polycarbonate, potassium diphenylsulfone sulfonate and polytetrafluoroethylene.

Aromatic carbonate polymers are flame retarded by an effective amount of a metal oxide of aluminum, magnesium, lithium, lanthanum, bismuth or yttrium. Colloidal aluminum oxide on silica is particularly effective.

Barium sulfate can be added to the surface of the porous inorganic oxide to make an improved support.

Fluoropolymers in the form of solid particles of specified diameter and dispersed in water are added and mixed with polycarbonate resin particles at a rate of 0.1 to 9 liter/hour to obtain a uniform coating of the fluoropolymer on the polycarbonate resin particles. The proportion of fluoropolymer added is from 0.01 to about 70 parts for each 100 parts by weight of polycarbonates and mixing is carried out to continually bring polycarbonate resin particles (non-contacted) into contact with the fluoropolymer dispension as it is added.

An extremely pure oxide containing two or more metals, homogeneous at the atomic level, is prepared by (1) reacting in water, soluble salts of two or more metals with quaternary ammonium carbonate; the metals being those that form water-insoluble carbonates, thereby to precipitate mixed carbonates of the metals; (2) recovering and drying the precipitate; (3) calcining the precipitate to provide an oxide of mixed metals homogeneous at the atomic level and substantially free from extraneous contaminants. The calcined oxide can be shaped and compressed as greenware and sintered to form useful ceramic products.

In a second embodiment, the inorganic oxide particles are first formed into the desired shape and then impregnated with the titania forming material. Barium sulfate can be added to the surface of the porous inorganic oxide to make an improved support.
