Calcined kaolin clay is pelletized in a pelletizer by a process wherein the calcined clay has ammonia added to it, suitably in relatively small amounts such as less than 1% by weight. The pelletized clay is preferably coated with a binder to improve its flowability.

Method for pelletizing calcined clay

A method for preparing a calcined kaolin clay powder having good high shear rheology in high solids aqueous slurries. A kaolin clay powder of fine particle size is calcined at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient period to destroy the crystallinity thereof; and the calcined product is dry milled in a media mill, using a work input of from 100 to 160 hp-hr/ton of dry clay.

A method of producing a high opacity paper filler pigment which comprises subjecting an iron-stained titania-containing kaolin to beneficiation by froth flotation or high intensity magnetic separation; recovering the froth or magnet rejects, dewatering and drying the rejects to produce a kaolin enriched in titania, and calcining the same at a temperature in the range of about 1500.degree. to about 2200.degree. F.

A method for forming a hydrothermally aggregated kaolin clay pigment, comprising preparing an aqueous slurry of particulate kaolin clay and sodium aluminate, having a total solids concentration of from about 2 to 25% by weight, the weight ratio between kaolin and aluminate being greater than 1; and hydrothermally treating the slurry in a closed system to form aggregates of adherent kaolin platelets.

Method for forming aggregated kaolin pigment

Aggregation of kaolin particles by wet processing using a hydrothermal technique is described. Calcined clay is first digested in a solution containing NaOH and the obtained sodium silicate solution is separated. Aggregation of uncalcined clay particles by hydrothermal treatment is then carried out using the obtained solution. The method enables aggregation of low grade clays unsuitable for calcination. A two-stage hydrothermal process is also described. Bleaching with oxygen or bleaching compounds may be effected during hydrothermal treatment.

Method of preparing aggregated pigments from clays

A structured kaolinitic pigment having improved physical and optical characteristics when incorporated as a filler in paper. The pigment is also useful in paper coating applications. The pigment consists of porous aggregates of kaolin particles which are chemically bonded together. The pigment may be produced by chemically reacting a particulate kaolin with a metal chloride, such as silicon tetrachloride. The process is conducted under conditions such that the kaolinite structure is not impaired.

Structured kaolin pigment and process for manufacture thereof

A method for chlorinating a clay mineral starting composition to produce reactive chloride intermediates, comprising: reacting said composition in substantially dry particulate form with gaseous SiCl.sub.4 to activate the surface of said composition, thereby forming said reactive chloride intermediate, said reaction being conducted at temperatures below that at which volatilization or dehydration of the starting composition will occur. The resulting compounds are highly reactive intermediates, which can then be functionalized by reaction with a large group of organics, or organic derivatives.

Process for surface treating clay minerals and reactive intermediates

A method for chlorinating the surface of a layered lattice silicate to produce a reactive chloride intermediate. The layered lattice silicate is reacted in substantially dry particulate form with a reactant system capable of forming bound chloride moieties at its surface, to form the said chloride thereof, the reaction being conducted at temperatures below that which would otherwise substantially alter the starting composition.

Process for surface treating layered lattice silicates and resultant

A method for improving brightness in a calcined kaolin pigment while minimizing detrimental effects on abrasiveness. The kaolin calciner feed is intermixed with a particulate material which is oxidizable during calcining to provide a source of auxiliary thermal energy in the kaolin bed; and the mixture is calcined at a temperature in the range of about 900.degree. C., but below about 1100.degree. C., and in the presence of an oxidizing atmosphere throughout the calcining step.

A fluidized bed apparatus is provided which comprises (a) a fluidized bed container having gaseous fluidization agent intake means and discharge means; (b) gaseous fluidization agent distributor means comprising a distributor-separator plate arranged intermediate said gaseous agent intake and discharge means that is adapted to receive a mass of solid particles and substantially separate said particles from said gaseous agent intake means and has a plurality of parts therethrough spaced over substantially the entire surface thereof which have means for controlling the velocity and dispersion of a gaseous fluidization agent passing between said intake means and said discharge means; and (c) vibrating means for vibrating said container. Preferably, said container includes filter means intermediate said distributor-separator plate and said gaseous agent discharge means.
