This patent application is directed to thermal management systems of vehicles with an electric powertrain. More specifically, the battery system and one or more powertrain components and/or cabin climate control components of a vehicle share the same thermal circuit as the battery module through which heat can be exchanged between the battery module and one or more powertrain or climate control components as needed.

Thermal management system for vehicles with an electric powertrain

Various embodiments herein relate to the design of battery stacks, batteries and battery packs that are able to accommodate volumetric expansion in the battery materials. These designs may be especially useful in connection with batteries having negative electrodes made of lithium metal and/or positive electrodes made of an electrochemically active conversion material. These batteries may expand on the order of 10-40% during cycling. The battery designs disclosed herein include compressible regions that span a wide variety of different designs and implementations.

Battery control systems

A system and method for mitigating the effects of a thermal event within a non-metal-air battery pack is provided in which the hot gas and material generated during the event is directed into the metal-air cells of a metal-air battery pack. The metal-air cells provide a large thermal mass for absorbing at least a portion of the thermal energy generated during the event before it is released to the ambient environment. As a result, the risks to vehicle passengers, bystanders, first responders and property are limited.

Hazard mitigation through gas flow communication between battery packs

Provided are battery packs and interface modules for electrically interconnecting electrochemical cells in the packs and for providing heat distribution with the packs. An interface module interfaces one side of all electrochemical cells in a battery pack. The interface module may have a substantially planar shape such that the space occupied by the module in the battery pack is minimal. Most, if not all, conductive components of the interface module may be formed from the same sheet of metal. In some embodiments, the interface module includes multiple bus bars such that each bus bar interconnects two or more terminals of different electrochemical cells in the battery pack. Each bus bar may have a separate voltage sense lead extending from the bus bar to a connecting portion. The bus bars may be flexibly supported within the module. The interface module may also include multiple thermistors disposed on different bus bars.

Thermal and electrical management of battery packs

The disclosure set forth herein is directed to battery devices and methods therefor. More specifically, embodiments of the instant disclosure provide a battery electrode that comprises both intercalation chemistry material and conversion chemistry material, which can be used in automotive applications. There are other embodiments as well.

Hybrid electrodes with both intercalation and conversion materials

A battery pack has an enclosure that contains a plurality of batteries and conductors and that resists the flow of fluid between an interior of the enclosure and an exterior of the enclosure. An exit vent formed in the enclosure at a first location allows exhaust gas to flow from the interior of the enclosure to the exterior of the enclosure. A fill port formed in the enclosure at a second location, in an impermeable state, prevent ingress of fluid from an exterior of the enclosure to an interior of the disclosure. The fill port, in a permeable state achieved by receipt of a perforation tool there through, permits ingress of a sufficient amount of a thermal-control liquid into the enclosure through the fill port to terminate a runaway thermal event in the battery pack. A fill port coupler having a passageway and an externally accessible port may be included.

Electric vehicle battery pack

A battery pack includes an enclosure containing a plurality of battery modules. A cooling system disposed among and electrically isolated from the plurality of battery modules uses a coolant solution that is a first mixture of a first liquid and a second liquid in a predetermined ratio to produce a first boiling point. Boiling of the coolant solution changes the predetermined ratio to produce a second boiling point that is higher than the first boiling point and that is sufficient to induce a thermal runaway condition for the plurality of battery module. A sensor monitors at least one operational characteristic of the plurality of battery modules and a controller determines a possible high voltage electrolysis within the enclosure based upon the at least one operational characteristic. A remediation system is responsive to the possible high voltage electrolysis to decrease risks associated with the possible high voltage electrolysis when operated.

Response to high voltage electrolysis of coolant in a battery pack

An apparatus and method for identifying a presence of a short circuit in a battery pack. A fault-detection apparatus for a charging system that rapidly charges a collection of interconnected lithium ion battery cells, the safety system includes a data-acquisition system for receiving a set of data parameters from the collection while the charging system is actively charging the collection; a monitoring system evaluating the set of data parameters to identify a set of anomalous conditions; and a controller comparing the set of anomalous conditions against a set of predetermined profiles indicative of an internal short in one or more cells of the collection, the controller establishing an internal-short state for the collection when the comparing has a predetermined relationship to the set of predetermined profiles.

Methodology for charging batteries safely

In an example, the present invention provides a method for forming a film of material for a solid state battery or other energy storage device. The method includes providing a first precursor species, and providing a second precursor species. The method also includes transferring the first precursor species through a first nozzle and outputting the first precursor species in a first molecular form and transferring the second precursor species through a second nozzle and outputting the second precursor species in a second molecular form. The method includes causing formation of first plurality of particles, ranging from about first diameter to about a second diameter, by intermixing the first precursor species with the second precursor species. The method also includes cooling the first plurality of particles at a rate of greater than 100&#xb0; C./s to a specified temperature.

Flash evaporation of solid state battery component

Solid state energy storage systems and devices are provided. A solid state energy storage devices can include an active layer disposed between conductive electrodes, the active layer having one or more quantum confinement species (QCS), such as quantum dots, quantum particles, quantum wells, nanoparticles, nanostructures, nanowires and nanofibers. The solid state energy storage device can have a charge rate of at least about 500 V/s and an energy storage density of at least about 150 Whr/kg.
