A method for detecting non-technical losses in an electrical power system includes measuring an area under a squared RMS current curve for a power cable in the electrical power system over at least one time interval, measuring an active and a reactive energy for the power cable over the at least one time interval, and characterizing a cable reactance and a cable resistance using the active energy, the reactive energy, and the area under the squared RMS current curve. The method further includes determining an active energy loss and a reactive energy loss over the at least one time interval using the area under the squared RMS current curve and the reactance and the resistance of the cable, and detecting a non-technical loss in the electrical power system based on the active energy loss and the reactive energy loss over the at least one time interval.

Detection and correction of technical and non-technical errors in smart grid power distribution are described. A system, method and non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored therein that, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform a method for detecting and correcting technical and non-technical power losses in a smart grid that feature the following functions: remotely characterizing and updating the cables impedances, detecting and classifying the types of losses, estimating the technical and non-technical power losses when a check or smart meter is in error, estimating losses due to tapping a power cable by a registered or an unregistered user, and estimating losses due to a cyber attack. Technical errors corrected are impedance and reactance losses in the power distribution. Non-technical errors identified and corrected are no error, check meter in error, smart meter in error, tapping service cables, or cyber attacks.

Accurate detection and correction of technical and non-technical losses using smart metering

A device, method, and computer-readable medium for correcting at least one error in readings of electricity meters, the method including receiving first readings of regular meters measuring electric energy delivered in each of a group of cables fed from a same distribution node in an electric grid during a period of time, receiving second readings of check meters measuring electric energy delivered in each of combinations of cables in the group of cables during the period of time, the combinations of cables being formed based on a redundant matrix in a generator matrix of a linear systematic block code, and correcting, in response to determining that at least one error been detected, the at least one error in the first readings of the regular meters and the second readings of the check meters.

A spectrum sensing method for cognitive radio wherein spectrum holes are detected in a wireless environment having spectrum scarcity. First, a cognitive radio user (CR) determines the power spectral density (PSD) of a wideband signal and detects subbands within the wideband using wavelet transforms (WT). WT coefficients are calculated by convolving the PSD with first derivatives of wavelet smoothing functions. The extrema of the WT coefficients demark frequency subband edges. Detecting subband edges becomes more robust against noise by median filtering the PSD before calculating WT coefficients, summing over WT coefficients with different scale factors, and suppressing WT coefficients below a noise threshold. After identifying subbands, the CR determines subband availability by measuring the subband power and signaling the power to a fusion center receiving power measurements from multiple cooperating CRs, and final decisions are based on data and decision fusion.

Cognitive radio spectrum sensing with improved edge detection of frequency bands

A spectrum sensing method for cognitive radio to detect spectrum holes in an environment of bandwidth scarcity. The method comprises first receiving a wireless signal at a cognitive radio user, and then discovering the frequency edges of allocated frequency bands by using wavelet transform coefficients to detect discontinuities in the power spectral density of the received signal. After determining the allocated frequency bands, the method determines frequency band availability by detecting the in band energy using a bi-threshold energy detector, where the energy detector makes hard decisions and soft decisions. Finally, a fusion center combines hard and soft decisions collected from a cooperative spectrum sensing network of cognitive radio users and makes a final decision using a hybrid of data fusion and decision fusion to determine the final decision regarding spectrum availability.
