A method and apparatus for filling an area of a computer display with a preselected color is provided. Typical computer systems software provides the capability to represent 256 different intensities of a color. However, many color displays cannot support the displaying of 256 intensity levels. The present invention provides a method and apparatus for mapping the higher number of intensity levels supported by the systems software to the lower number of intensity levels actually supported by the display. In a preferred embodiment, four picture elements (pels) of a display are logically grouped together to create a super-pel. By varying the intensity level in each pel of a super-pel, the effective number of intensity levels for a given color can be increased.

Method and apparatus for displaying color on a computer output device

An apparatus and method for navigating through an application program on a computer coupled to a computer-controlled display screen. The user can control the cursor position on the computer-controlled display using simple controls. The invention may use a hand-held controller with a four direction control button and a function select button. The computer accepts the direction input information and moves the cursor or focus according to one of three different navigation functions. The first two navigation functions are selected by the application program, and may change from one navigation to another in different portions of the program or under user control. With the first navigation function, the direction buttons on the controller shift the focus from one hot spot to another hot spot in the selected direction using predefined criteria. With the second navigation function, the focus is shifted from a present position on the computer-controlled display to the adjacent position in the selected direction. If the function select button is depressed while the focus is on a hot spot, the function associated with that particular hot spot are enabled. A third navigation function is enabled if the function select button and the directional control button are both depressed. With the third navigational function, the focus moves from the current position in any direction selected by the directional control button. The focus movement may simultaneously occur in two dimensions using any of the navigational functions if the user selects directions in two dimensions on the four directional control button.

Apparatus and method for controlling cursor movement

A method and system of displaying a pattern using a bitmap memory display which acomplishes an overall pattern display by writing to the display memory one copy of the pattern. The logical unit (LU) of the system's graphics adapter (GA) is then used to replicate the pattern throughout the bitmap memory with a reduced number of write operations from the central processing unit (CPU) to the GA.

Method and system for displaying patterns using a bitmap display

A method and system of displaying a monochrome bitmap on a color display. In a preferred embodiment, a system according to the present invention accomplishes the display of the monochrome bitmap in any two preselected colors. The multibit representations for the two preselected display colors are compared to identify bitmap planes having common bit values for each color. The input for logic units for the identified planes are then forced to 0. The latch registers for each plane of the bitmap memory are then set to the bit value for the first preselected color in that plane. The input values from the monochrome bitmap, as altered by the force-to-0 operation for common planes, are logically exclusively ORed with the latch register values to produce the bitmap memory values for displays. An alternate embodiment suitable for updating partial bytes within the bitmaps is also provided.
