An apparatus for an internal combustion engine () includes a base engine () having an intake system () and an exhaust system (). A turbine () has an inlet in fluid communication with the exhaust system (), and an outlet. A first exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler () fluidly communicates with the intake system () and the exhaust system () of the engine (). An EGR valve () is in fluid communication with the EGR cooler (), and a purge valve () is in fluid communication with the EGR cooler () and the outlet of the turbine ().

EGR cooler purging apparatus and method

A valve () selectively shunts exhaust gas around a stage (T) of a turbocharger turbine () under control of a control system that selectively renders an EGR system () active and inactive and that develops a value for a set-point of operation for the valve. The control system comprises a first map set () containing data that the control system uses to the exclusion of data in a second map set () to develop the set-point value when the EGR system is active. When the EGR system is inactive, the control system uses the data in the second map set to the exclusion of the data in the first map set to develop the set-point value.

System and method for relieving engine back-pressure by selectively bypassing a stage of a two-stage turbocharger during non-use of EGR

An apparatus includes an inlet () at a first end of a pipe (), wherein a flow of fluid enters the inlet (). A first outlet () is at a second end of the pipe (). A second outlet () is disposed between the first end and the second end of the pipe (). A flow deflector () deflects a first part of the flow out of the second outlet (). A second part of the flow exits the first outlet ().

There is provided a system and method for using an engine's exhaust back pressure to control a variable geometry turbocharger. The control system determines a desired exhaust back pressure based on engine speed and engine load. The desired exhaust back pressure is compared with a measured exhaust back pressure to determine the difference between the measured and desired exhaust back pressures. The difference value is used to determine the duty cycle. In an alternate embodiment, the exhaust gas pressure is used to adjust the duty cycle determined by other operating parameters. A base duty cycle is determined from the engine speed and the engine load. The difference between the measured and desired exhaust back pressures is used to determine an exhaust pressure control duty cycle. The base duty cycle is then adjusted by the exhaust pressure control duty cycle to give a turbocharger duty cycle.
