The present disclosure provides modified, transgenic, or genome edited/mutated corn plants that are semi-dwarf and have one or more improved ear traits relative to a control plant, such as increase in ear area, increased single kernel weight, increased ear fresh weight, increased number of florets, and mitigated flowering delay. The modified, transgenic, or genome edited/mutated corn plants comprise a transgene encoding one or more CONSTANS (CO) or CONSTANS-like (COL) polypeptide and have a reduced expression of one or more GA20 or GA3 oxidase genes. Also provided are methods for producing the modified, transgenic, or genome edited/mutated corn plants.

The invention also relates to the construction of a chimeric gene encoding all or a substantial portion of the auxin transport protein, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein expression of the chimeric gene results in production of altered levels of the auxin transport protein in a transformed host cell. Methods and compositions for modulating development and/or developmental pathways are provided. The compositions of the present invention comprise nucleic acid and amino acid sequences. Particularly, the nucleotide sequence (SEQ ID NO:1, 3, 4 or 7) and amino acid sequence (SEQ ID NO:2 or 8) for a maize CLAVATA3-like (CLV3-like) polypeptide are provided. The structure and function of a regulatory gene, SCARECROW (SCR), is described. The SCR gene is expressed specifically in root progenitor tissues of embryos, and in roots and stems of seedlings and plants. The present invention provides compositions and methods for regulating the expression of nucleotide sequence of interest in a plant. Compositions include a novel nucleotide sequence comprising an inducible promoter for the 5C9 gene, which encodes a maize patatin-like polypeptide. A method for expressing a nucleotide sequence of interest in a plant using the promoter sequences disclosed herein is provided. The method comprises stably incorporating into the genome of a plant cell a nucleotide sequence operably linked to the inducible promoter of the present invention and regenerating a stably transformed plant that expresses the nucleotide sequence in an inducible manner.
