An optical network unit (ONU) includes a transmitter and receiver to optically communicate with an optical line terminal (OLT) of a passive optical network. The ONU is configured to send an acknowledgment message to the OLT in response to a burst-profile message unicast by the OLT. The acknowledgement message indicates unsupported forward error correction (FEC) code in response to the burst-profile message identifying an FEC code for upstream transmission and the ONU not supporting the FEC code for upstream transmission to the OLT.

Acknowledgment-based flexible FEC selection

An upstream (US) optical line terminal (OLT) for a passive optical network having at least one downstream (DS) optical network unit (ONU). The OLT generates a trigger signal indicating a need to receive at least one US burst having a shortened codeword for a first forward error-correction (FEC) code. Based on the trigger signal, the OLT transmits a DS message instructing the ONU to transmit an US burst having a shortened codeword. The OLT receives and decodes the US burst having the shortened codeword using the first FEC code. During periods of high bit-error rate, the shortened codewords increase the ability of the OLT to decode the US bursts and keep communications from the ONU alive. The OLT can use the decoded US bursts to measure BER and, if appropriate, instruct the ONU to use a different FEC code.

Using shortened codewords in passive optical networks

Example embodiments describe an optical line terminal, OLT, configured to perform determining a fragmentation allocation for respective ONUs; and notifying, the respective ONUs, of the fragmentation allocation. Other example embodiments relate to an optical network unit, ONU, configured to perform receiving, from the OLT, fragmentation allocation for fragmenting one or more packets; processing the packets in accordance with the fragmentation allocation to obtain fragmented and unfragmented packets; and forwarding, to the OLT, the fragmented and unfragmented packets in accordance with the dynamic upstream allocation map.

Optical line terminal and an optical network unit

An apparatus, for use by an Optical Network Unit, performs receiving, from an Optical Line Terminal, a broadcast message including code set information indicating a first code set selected from a plurality of error correction code sets; determining whether the first code set is comprised in a group of code sets supported by the Optical Network Unit, wherein, the group of code sets includes at least one code set of the plurality of error correction code sets; and encoding an upstream transmission with the first code set, in case the first code set is included in the group of code sets.

Method and apparatus for ONU activation

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to devices, methods, apparatuses and computer readable storage media of ONU activation for OLT Equalizer training. The method includes determining, at OLT, configuration information indicating a bandwidth allocation dedicated for an ONU and a first target preamble sequence associated with the bandwidth allocation, the first target preamble sequence to be used by the ONU for a transmission from the ONU to the OLT on a first wavelength; transmitting the configuration information to the ONU; and receiving the transmission from the ONU from the ONU on the first wavelength, the transmission is performed by the ONU based on the first target preamble sequence.

Devices, methods, apparatuses and computer readable storage media for optical communication

A method for channel management in an optical network unit includes receiving a disable channel action message sent by an optical line terminal, wherein the disable channel action message is used to instruct disabling a first channel of the optical network unit; transferring the state machine of the optical network unit on the first channel from the association substate of the operation state to the pending substate according to the disable channel action message; and turning off the transmitter and/or the receiver on the first channel after a specified time is reached, transferring the state machine from the pending substate of the operation state to the disabling channel status, and starting a timer.

Method, apparatus and system for channel management in passive optical network

Various example embodiments of the present disclosure relates to a physical layer, PHY, circuitry for an optical line terminal, OLT, the PHY circuitry being configured to receive a control signal including an identification of a transmitting ONT for pre-loading an equalization configuration associated with the identification of the transmitting ONT. Other example embodiments relate to a medium access control, MAC, circuitry for OLT, the MAC circuitry being configured to determine an upstream allocation map for optical network terminals, ONTs, and to generate a control signal for a PHY circuitry including synchronization information for receiving upstream optical signal bursts from a transmitting ONT and an identification of the transmitting ONT based on the upstream allocation map.
