An internal combustion engine having an exhaust-gas turbocharger is provided. The exhaust-gas turbocharger includes a variable turbine geometry that allows for a greater range of use. The exhaust-gas turbocharger is used as a throttling device to dimension the combustion-air quantity delivered to the engine. The variable turbine geometry can be adjusted in such a way that the direction of rotation of the rotor of the exhaust-gas turbocharger is reversed. The intake pressure in the air inlet of the internal combustion engine is set as a function of the direction of rotation of the rotor.

An exhaust gas turbocharging system for an internal combustion engine including a turbine portion with adjustable turbine geometry for powering a compressor portion which delivers a pressurized charge air mass flow to the internal combustion engine air intake. A charge regulator controls the turbine geometry so that the cross-section of exhaust gas flow to the turbine portion is decreased with an increased working load of the internal combustion engine. It is further proposed that at least one heat exchanger is exposed to the charge air circuit so that heated air is fed thereto for heating such as to heat engine lubricating oil.

A method detects and evaluates emissions from plants, in particular from incineration or industrial plants. The absolute quantities of the pollutants are determined at preset intervals and an average over a preset measuring interval is formed therefrom. When a preset limiting average is exceeded, a check is made to determine whether this excess is due to a functional fault of the plant. If so, the plant is switched over to emergency running. If there is no functional fault, the running of the plant is restricted until the average falls again below the limiting average. The pollutant quantities determined are stored and can be utilized for determining levies.
