The present invention relates to composite materials made of at least one composite layer of a polyurethane and of a second composite layer which is directly bonded to the first layer and which consists of a thermoplastic material that is different from the polyurethane of layer A). The polyurethane material of layer A) is characterized by a residual content of free reaction components containing ether groups of no more than 400 ppm, and preferably of no more than 100 ppm. The invention also relates to a process for the production of these composite materials and to a method of their use as materials in motor vehicles.

Molded polyurethane articles are made by reacting polyisocyanates with polyol compositions obtained by chemical decomposition of polyurethane and/or polyurea waste in a mold. C. of more than 2,000 mPa.s. Hydroxyfunctional compounds suitable for use in the polyisocyanate polyaddition process are obtained from polyurethane and/or polyurethane polyurea waste by decomposition with an alcohol and subsequent reaction of the alcoholysis products to reduce their content of low molecular weight, sterically unhindered aromatic amines. In this process, polyurethane and/or polyurethane polyurea waste is first treated with a low molecular weight diol or polyol at a temperature of from about 160 to 260.degree. C. The resultant alcoholysis product may then either be further heated at a temperature lower than that used in the first step within the ranger of from about 50 to 180.degree. C. or reacted with a dialkyl carbonate and/or 1,3-dicarbonyl compound.

Liquid polyamine crosslinking agent formulations based on trimerized toluylene 2,4- and/or 2,6-diisocyanate, with formation of an isocyanurate structure and hydrolysis of the isocyanate groups to amine groups, are described. The novel crosslinking agent formulations have a content of 40 to 80% of the total weight of the solids content of the crosslinking agent formulation of 1,3,5-tris-(3-amino-4-methyl-phenyl,2-methyl-3-aminophenyl) isocyanurate (I) which is not further condensed, and a content of not more than 1.0% of the total weight of the crosslinking agent formulations of toluylene-2,4- and/or -2,6-diamine (III). For the preparation, toluylene diisocyanate is trimerized, to form the isocyanurate structure, until 10 to 25% of the NCO groups have been reacted. The toluylene diisocyanate which has not undergone condensation is then distilled off, the bottom product formed by this operation is taken up directly in a solvent A and the 30 to 70% strength by weight solution formed by this procedure is metered into a hydrolysis in water/N,N-dialkyl-carboxylic acid amide in the presence of a catalytic amount of a basic catalyst. After the hydrolysis, the crosslinking agent formulations are brought to a solids content of 35 to 60% of the total weight of the formulation by distilling off a portion of the solvents and adding a solvent B.

Compounds containing hydroxyl groups, which are suitable for the polyisocyanate addition polymerization process, are prepared from polyurethane-polyurea and/or polyurea waste materials. Compounds containing alcoholic hydroxyl groups suitable as a starting material for the isocyanate polyaddition process by the alcoholysis of polyisocyanate polyaddition products are produced. Polyurethane urea or polyurea waste products having a molar ratio of urea groups to urethane groups of from 1:20 to 1:0 are heated in size reduced form to temperatures of from 120.degree. to 250.degree. C. together with B) polyhyhdric alcohols in the molecular weight range of from 62 to 250 in a ratio by weight of A:B of from 3:1 to 1:10. The resulting compounds containing hydroxyl groups may be used as starting material for the production of polyurethane resins by the isocyanate polyaddition process.

Polyamines containing primary amino groups are made by hydrolyzing an isocyanate with water in the presence of a solvent which is a carboxylic acid amide. The solvent must be used in a quantity of at least 10% by weight solvent based on 100% by weight of isocyanate. The weight ratio of solvent to water must be from 3 to 200.
