In a lamination process, a method for changing the withdrawal of a top layer to be applied to a base material at a belt type press by feeding of the forward end of the top layer from a second roller to the rearward end of the top layer from a first roller. The top layer from the first roller is then cut off in coordination with the arrival of the forward end of the top layer arriving from the second roller, so that the ends of both top layers are positioned on the base material flush with one another with a slight separating line or in an overlapping manner.

Apparatus for making laminates such as a wood panel, in particular a chip board or a fiber board or the like, includes a prepress having an inlet for receiving particulate material such as wood particles and adapted to form a pressing zone in which the wood particles are conducted initially in vertical direction and subsequently laterally deflected by 90.degree. along a curved path to form a material strand. The prepress includes two continuous conveyor belts that have upper substantially horizontal belt sections for receiving the particulate material and transporting material webs to the inlet. A device for applying surface pressure to an advancing plate-shaped workpiece comprises two endless pressing belts positioned at two opposite surfaces of the advancing workpiece, and two pressure plates spaced from the respective pressing belts and forming pressure chambers containing pressure medium which presses the working strands of the pressing belts against the opposite surfaces of the advancing workpiece. In a device for applying surface pressure to advancing workpieces like boards of wooden material etc. with at least one continuous compression belt against the inside of which a compression plate acts, several pressure chambers are distributed along the width and/or the length of the effective pressure surface of the belt. Each pressure chamber consists on the one hand of a sealing strip and on the other hand of the facing surfaces of the compression plate and of the compression belt. The sealing strips are resiliently secured against and can be released from the compression plate by a strip-like diaphragm that demarcates a pressure space.

In a device for applying surface pressure to advancing workpieces like sheets of wood-based material and similar products with at least one revolving compression belt that a pressure plate acts on the inside of, several pressure chambers are distributed along the belt. Each chamber is constituted out of a holder that has a sealing strip. The holder and sealing strip are secured in such a way that they can be adjusted in a groove in the pressure plate by means of lateral guides constituted out of screws, adapters, or similar structures that are secured in such a way that they can be adjusted to the holder in the plane of the belt in such a way that deleterious horizontal displacement forces exerted by the belt on the sealing strip can be diverted into the pressure plate.

In an apparatus for applying surface pressure onto advancing workpieces including at least one rotating pressing belt whose interior is acted on by a pressure plate, a plurality of smaller pressure chambers are arranged over the width of the effective pressure area of the pressing belt. Each one of these pressure chambers is divided into an inner pressure chamber and an outer pressure chamber so that the compressed air first builds up in the inner pressure chamber and then, with a delay, in the outer pressure chamber. Moreover, the inner fitting may be provided with a blocking device which temporarily blocks the supply of pressure medium to the outer pressure chamber.
