The present invention is concerned with soft-magnetic iron effect pigments with metallic luster, which are produced by grinding reductively treated carbonyl iron powder, and which are passivated either during grinding or subsequent to the grinding. The products find application in the decorative and functional fields in paint and lacquer coatings, coloring of plastics, in printing, cosmetics, and glass and ceramics.

The present invention deals with metal oxide coated, flake shaped soft iron pigments. The characteristic feature is a reflector substrate, which is produced by deformation of reduced carbonyl iron powder. The pigments are colorful, display metallic luster and a high magnetic permeability. They can be oriented in the medium by means of an external magnetic field. The novel pigments find use in the decorative and/or functional field, particularly in lacquers, paints, plastics, in printing, in glass, ceramics and in cosmetics.

Luster pigments comprising coated, plateletlike, silicatic substrates wherein the coating comprises a layer consisting essentially of carbon and aluminum oxide, chromium oxide, cerium oxide, zirconium oxide, antimony oxide or mixtures thereof, are obtainable by applying carbon-containing compounds of the metals aluminum, chromium, cerium, zirconium, antimony or mixtures thereof with or without further carbon-containing compounds of the molecular formula (CH.sub.2 O).sub.n, where n is from 1 to 6 for one monomeric unit, to the substrate particles and then thermally decomposing the carbon-containing compounds on the surface of the substrate particles under oxygen-excluding conditions.

Iron oxides in the form of platelets are produced by hydrothermal treatment of aqueous suspensions containing iron(III) hydroxide or oxide hydrates in the presence of alkali metal hydroxides and of aluminum and/or silicon compounds in two stages. The normality of the alkali is from 0 2 to 2 N in the first stage and is increased by from 0.2 to 2.5 in the second stage. The two-stage process according to the invention makes it possible to produce hematite pigments which are in the form of platelets, have increased luster, larger particle diameter, improved dispersibility and color hues which can be adjusted as desired.

A novel carrier which is stable and effective over long cycle times (6.times.10.sup.6 prints), has an iron oxide coating of the formula (FeO).sub.x.Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 where x=0.1-1 and is obtained by treating steel cores (or balls) with defined small amounts of sulfuric acid of defined concentration, partial oxidation of the cores thus treated and drying at 60.degree.-150.degree. A luster pigment is described which is made up of a metal oxide film on a colored platelet-like support. The support is a pigment having a length of 3-150 .mu.m, a width of 3-150 .mu.m, and a thickness of 0.1-2 .mu.m. A process is described for the preparation of the pigment in which an organic platelet-like pigment is coated with a metal-oxide film by chemical vapor deposition. The preferred platelet-like organic pigment is .beta.-copper phthalocyanine.
