In large electrical machines, the electrical connection between the excitation supply line (7, 8), which runs axially, centrally in the rotor, and the excitation winding conductors (4) in the winding overhang (3) of the rotor is highly stressed electrically and mechanically. It must therefore be forced-cooled. Effective cooling can be achieved if a portion of the cooling gas from the cold gas chambers is guided through special radial shaft holes (20) to the shaft axis and then radially outwards through or along the excitation supply line bolt (13) into the hot gas space (H) in the rotor winding overhang space.

In large electric machines, the electrical connection between the exciter supply lead (7, 8), which extends axially in the center of the rotor, and the exciter winding conductors (4) in the winding overhang (3) of the rotor is highly stressed electrically and mechanically. If use is made of an elastic exciter terminal stud (13) made from steel, and the connecting conductors (17, 18) are supported between the exciter terminal stud (13) and the conductors (4) of the rotor winding overhang on the rotor cap, preferably on its cap plate (6), excessive stresses occur neither on the shaft (2) nor on the connecting conductors (17, 18). It is preferable in this arrangement to make use of a terminal stud (13) that is slotted in the longitudinal direction of the stud and has at least three slots. Such a stud is elastic transversely to its longitudinal direction and can be purposively cooled.

In electric machines having gas-cooled rotor windings which consist of part conductors (5,6) which are placed on top of each other and have an E or U section, relative movements between the part conductor pairs occur during shaft rotation which generate copper abrasion. Such relative movements are inexpensively prevented by a 'covered' riveting of the part-conductor pairs.

An exciter-current lead-through bolt which is passed through a radial bore in the rotor shaft of a dynamo-electric machine, especially a turbo-generator, and screwed into an exciter-current lead-in conductor bar which lies in a longitudinally extending bore within the shaft. The radially outer part of the lead-through bolt is mechanically and electrically connected with a terminal conductor bar leading to the exciter winding located on the rotor. The lead-through bolt preferably made of steel because of its high mechanical strength is cooled internally by means of a forced air circulation system including a tube inserted in a longitudinal bore through the bolt, the diameter of the bore being greater than the external diameter of the tube in order to provide an annular space therebetween for flow of air from an air inlet port outside of the shaft radially inward to the end of the tube adjacent the inner end of the bolt, then into the tube and radially outward therethrough to an air discharge port also located outside of the rotor shaft and at a radial distance greater than the air inlet port.
