The invention relates to a separator made of elastic plastic and suitable for use in a lead storage battery, and consisting of sheet material with an inner region and two peripheral regions and having ribs running in the longitudinal direction on at least one side, the ribs in the inner region being more widely spaced than those in the peripheral region, characterized in that at least the first 3 ribs in the peripheral region that are adjacent to the inner region have a cross-section essentially in the form of a triangle projecting from the level of the sheet material, with the base of the triangle on the sheet material, one side of the triangle facing the inner region and the other side facing the periphery, the side facing the inner region being longer than that facing the periphery, and to a lead storage battery containing such separators.

Battery separator comprising a consolidated nonwoven mat of ultrafine polymeric fibers in which at least 10% of said fibers have a diameter less than 1 micron and which mat has an average pore size of less than 3 .mu.m. The fiber mat is formed by meltblowing using modified conditions to produce a self-bonded web having the desired content of ultra fine fibers.

Process for repairing manufacturing defects in porous separator webs for accumulators in which a repair material is deposited in targeted manner onto the defect in-line repair as production of the separator web proceeds and the defect is thus sealed, or in which the defect is heated in-line at certain points and thereby welded. Suitable as repair materials are in particular polymers and/or resins dispersible in a dispersion agent, polymerizable materials and hot-melts. Welding preferably takes place using ultrasonics.

Process for repairing battery separators

A lead/sulphuric acid storage battery with negative and positive electrode plates, between which plastics microporous separators or glass-fiber separators are arranged, comprises un-crosslinked natural or synthetic rubber to combat antimony poisoning in the battery. The rubber is preferably in the form of a layer comprising un-crosslinked natural or synthetic rubber or is incorporated into a carrier layer on the separators, on the side facing the negative electrode plate. Alternatively, the un-crosslinked natural or synthetic rubber can be incorporated into the separator sheet or into the negative electrode plate. The deposition of the rubber as a coating onto the inner walls of the battery box is also possible.

In a separator made of elastic synthetic material for starter batteries, which has a sheet thickness of approx. 0.15 to 0.35 mm and solid ribs formed integrally on both sides from the synthetic material, such that on the front side of the separator facing the positive electric plate a number of ribs is arranged, the height of which is greater than the thickness of the separator sheet, while the ribs on the rear side of the separator facing the negative electrode plate have a smaller height than the ribs on the front side, there are ribs on the rear side each arranged offset to the ribs on the front side, such that a front-side rib runs between two rear-side ribs arranged as a pair, or a rear-side rib runs between two front-side ribs arranged as a pair, such that the distance between the two ribs arranged in a pair is considerbly smaller than the distance between the adjacent groups each formed of three associated ribs.
