A process for preparing polyurea or polyurethane/urea foams from a polyamine or aminated polyether polyol is provided. The process comprises reacting the above component with a polyisocyanate (e.g. TDI, MDI etc.), a blowing agent (e.g. water) and a carboxylic acid or carboxylate acid salt. The function of the carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid salt is to slow down the reaction between the amine and the isocyanate so that effective foaming can take place before the reaction is completed.

Process for preparing polyurea or polyurethane/urea foams

A process for preparing a dispersion of a filler e.g., melamine, urea or borax in a dispersion or graft polymer polyol is provided. The process comprises (1) dispersing the filler in a suitable basestock (e.g., a polyether polyol) and (2) thereafter using this as the basestock for preparing the dispersion or graft polymer polyol. The polymer which is prepared in dispersed form in the second step may be for example (1) the reaction product of a polyamine, hydrazine or hydrazide and an isocyanate (PHD polymer) or (2) the reaction product of an olamine and an isocyanate (PIPA polymer). Alternatively styrene and acrylonitrile can be graft polymerised in the basestock in step (2). The new dispersion or graft polymer polyols containing dispersed filler are useful in the manufacture of fire resistant polyurethane foam for e.g., furniture applications.

Process for preparing polyurethane foams having zones of differing

Amines are produced by reacting at elevated temperature a first reactant which is either an alcohol, an aldehyde or a ketone with a second reactant which is either ammonia, a primary or secondary amine or a nitrile in the presence as catalyst of a composition comprising (i) nickel, (ii) ruthenium, and (iii) at least one other transition metal selected from either the second or third row transition metals, for example palladium, rhenium or iridium.

Modified polyols having the formula R.sub.m SiXx.sub.4-m wherein m=1 to 3, X is an alkoxy group and at least one R group is either HS--R.sup.1 -- or HS--(SiR.sup.2.sub.2 O).sub.n -- are described. The modified polyols, when mixed with base polyol, are used in the manufacture of graft polymer polyols having low viscosity and good filtrability. The graft polymer polyol can be used in the manufacture of polyurethane foam.

A modified polyol, suitable for use as a non-aqueous dispersant in the preparation of polymer/polyols containing high levels of polymer, is provided. The modified polyol comprises the product obtained by reaction of a polyol with a coupling agent having at least two functional groups which are reactable with hydroxyl groups on the polyol. Suitable coupling agents include silicon compounds having two such functional groups, organic compounds having two or more alkoxy groups, saturated dicarboxylic acid derivatives, alkyl or aryl esters of carbonic acid, alkyl or aryl sulphonates, boric acid or its esters and titanates.

A flexible polyurethane foam formulation which is non-reactive at or near ambient temperatures is provided. The formulation comprises a polyisocyanate, a polyfunctional active hydrogen containing compound, an amine catalyst, a blowing agent and a polyether acid. The formulation which becomes reactive above 40.degree. C. has the advantage, over similar systems based on formic acid, that the polyurethane foam is not tight and does not suffer from skin peeling.

Process for preparing polyurethane foams in the presence of a polyether

A flexible polyurethane foam formulation which is non-reactive at or near ambient temperature is provided. The formulation comprises a polyisocyanate, a polyfunctional active hydrogen containing compound, an amine catalyst, a blowing agent and a polyether acid. The formulation which becomes reactive above 40.degree. C. has the advantage, over similar systems based on formic acid, that the polyurethane foam is not tight and does not suffer from skin peeling.

Emulsions of oil and water are broken by treating them with a demulsifier which is a polysiloxane polyalkylene oxide copolymer in which the polyalkylene oxide segment is composed of random ethylene oxide and propylene oxide units. The demulsifier is particularly useful in breaking emulsions of water in crude oil which are normally difficult to separate and in breaking emulsions at relatively low temperatures, e.g. 30.degree. to 45.degree. C.

A curable phenolic resin composition comprising (A) a major proportion of an aqueous phenolic resole resin and (B) a minor proportion of a poly(1,2-alkylene oxide) having terminating groups selected from the group comprising --NH.sub.2, --CONH.sub.2, --CH.CO.NH.sub.2 and --OCONH.sub.2 groups. The compositions are preferably cured with an acid catalyst and post cured at an elevated temperature.
