Disclosed herein are a surface modifier for metal oxide particles and a method of modifying the surface of metal oxide particles using the same. The surface modifier consists either of an alkylsilanepolyol containing a cyclic alkyl group capable of imparting steric hindrance or of a mixture of said alkylsilanepolyol with alkylalkoxysilane, and the method of modifying the surface of metal oxide particles comprises coating the surface modifier on the hydrophilic surface of the metal oxide particles through chemical bonding so as to impart hydrophobicity or amphiphilicity (hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity) and reactivity to the surface of the metal oxide particles. Through the use of alkylsilane triol having a specific chemical structure, surface-modified metal particles having uniform particle size distribution can be provided not only by inhibiting the condensation and agglomeration of the surface modifier itself during a high-temperature condensation reaction for inducing the chemical bonding between metal oxide and the modifier, but also by stabilizing silicon-hydroxyl (Si&#x2014;OH) bonds.

Surface modifiers and process for surface modifications of particles of metal oxide using the same

The present invention relates to (2-cyclopentenyl)chlorosilane derivatives and the preparation method thereof. In particular, it relates to a very economical process which reacts cyclopentadiene, which is formed by a cracking of industrially produced low-priced dicyclopentadiene, with a silane compound containing silicon-hydrogen bonds at elevated temperature in a hydrocarbon compound with a boiling point of a predetermined range, thus also enabling to prevent problematic production of dicyclopentadiene polymer by using the hydrocarbon compound. Further, in the presence of a group 10 metal compound catalyst, the process herein is capable of lowering the reaction temperature and increasing the yield in the reaction of sterically hindered alkyl-dichlorosilane. The (2-cyclopentenyl)chlorosilane may be useful in preparing an organic silicon compound containing an unsaturated group or a functional silicone polymer using the same, or in modifying the surface or manufacturing a thin layer.

The present invention relates to a &#x3c9;-[2-(polyalkyleneoxy)ethylthio]alkylalkoxysilane derivative and a preparation method thereof, more particularly to a &#x3c9;-[2-(polyalkyleneoxy)ethylthio]alkylalkoxysilane derivative prepared by transforming a (&#x3c9;-mercaptoalkyl)alkylalkoxysilane compound into a &#x3c9;-(alkoxysilyl)alkylthiolate metal salt by treating it with a metallic base and performing dehalometallation at low reaction temperature using a poly(alkyleneoxy)alkyl ether halide or a poly(alkyleneoxy)bis(haloalkyl) ether to form a carbon-sulfur bond and a preparation method thereof. The novel compound of the present invention has not only a Si&#x2014;OR bond but also contains a sulfur atom in the molecule, so that it can be used as monomer for synthesizing hydrophilic functional silicon polymers, source material of silicon-based surfactants and surface modifier of organic/inorganic materials. In addition, the preparation method of the compound is an economical one as the reaction can be performed at room temperature, the production yield is high and the reaction byproduct (metal halide) can be easily removed by filtration.

&#x3c9;-[2-(polyalkyleneoxy)ethylthio]alkylalkoxysilane derivative and preparation method thereof

This invention relates to (organothiomethyl)chlorosilanes and methods for their preparation by the dehydrohalogenative Si&#x2014;C coupling reaction of oranothiomethyl halides with Si&#x2014;H containing chlorosilanes (hydrosilanes), wherein a mixture of oranothiomethyl halide and hydrosilane is heated in the presence of tertiary amine or organic salts (quaternary organoammonium and organophosphonium halides to give (organothiomethyl)chlorosilanes, which is existing a sulfur atom in alkyl chain, (formula: RSCHSiClR) in good yield. wherein Rrepresents a hydrogen atom, halogen, or C&#x2013;Calkyl; Ris selected from the group consisting of C&#x2013;Calkyl or an aryl group. Especially, this reaction using organic salt as a catalyst provide better economical matter and yield compared with conventional methods, because only catalytic amount of organic salt is required and the catalyst can be separated from the reaction mixture and recycled easily.
